BRF cake help.
    #10568120 - 06/24/09 11:59 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Alright, well I had my first harvest off of 1 cake about 3 weeks ago, and I just put down 2 more cakes because they were finished in the jars. They pinned up about a week ago, but the progress on them is extremely slow...

I water/fan them 3 times a day, with a fan hooked up in the room for air circulation. Right now I have a bunch of pins on all 3, the size of pen tips, but they haven't really gotten much bigger, just wondering if this is normal, or if it should be going alot faster, to my knowledge they should be bigger by now.

I can get pics up to\morrow probably, but not def.  Any help would be awesome

Thanks again for all the help shroomery!

Hmmm, not really enough detail in your description to really say, but here are some thoughts:

What kind of setup do you have?  How are you humidifying the cakes???  You say you are "watering them" 3 times a day, which sounds like you're off to a bad start.  Given that you're new to this (as I am, really, though with more success than you're having) you should just go with simple Perlite humidification.  Put down a couple inches of wet perlite, and lay the cakes on top of that (directly or separated by foil, jar lid, etc).  You can LIGHTLY MIST the cakes a couple times a day, but it's really not necessary if you've got nice wet Perlite.  Just fan a couple times a day, esp. if you only have a couple cakes in there, as they won't change the CO2 composition too much.

Also, try to keep the temps in the 70's.  And they should be getting 12 hours of light a day (sunlight or fluorescent are best.  I just keep my glass terrarium in a window).

Don't over-love them.  Let the Perlite keep the air moist, let the sun warm the fruiting chamber and signal the pins to fruit, and just fan it occasionally.

what kind of terrarium are you using?

shotgun tubs really do work well and would suggest using one if you are not.

feel you cakes, do they feel dry? try increasing the misting.

if they feel too wet, maybe cut back a little on how much you mist each time.

also, i used to use a cool mist blowing into my shotgun tub almost all day, and it worked wonders for me.

Don't put them directly on the perlite...make sure you have your fc elevated so humidity can rise through out the fc..assuming you have have a sgfc(shotgun fc) and holes on the bottom of it.

once apon a time....

my cakes just sat in fruiting conditions for a good week. and then..... they blew up. i was a happy camper when that happened.
saw a few pins at first and i was psyched, then they just FRUITED. and then i was amazed.

OP

be patient.
you will be rewarded.

sorry for the bad description, it was late when i wrote that last night..

Im using the shotgun terrarium, 5 inches of perlite, holes put in 1/2" away from each other, including bottom of terrarium.
The temps in my room is probably about 60° which wasn't a problem when the 1st cake fruited( I got 96 shroomies, which gave me a little more than an oz. dry.) . After lastnight It seems things are going okay with the new cakes. And I give the cakes 12 hours exposure to a black light.

Thanks again guys
