Humidity issue

Ok so I've been tweaking my shotgun terrarium over the last couple of days to try to maintain 95%+ of humidity but it always gradually returns to 90-93% or so. 4 inches of perlite, ambient humidity 60-70%, holes in all six sides, the terr. suspended 2 inches above the surface, analog hygrometer properly calibrated, basically the tek by the letter. Any suggestions??

when i had my shotgun tub outside of my closet, it would stay in the high 80's-low 90's. once i put in in my closet, the humidity settled around 94-97%. maybe try shoving it in a closet?
that would be my suggestion.
either that or add a spot for an ultrasonic a few times a day.

no not really, as long as you open the door more than once a week, your shrooms shouldn't use up all that oxygen haha.
generally i took a peek at mine about 6 times a day.
opened the top, said hello, misted fanned, waved goodbye, and they did just great =].
sorry if i seem a bit strange, but i like to take good care of my little guys =]

What kind of hygrometer? Please tell me it's not digital...Also when's the last time you calibrated it with a moist towel?

It's not digital.. it's mechanical (15$ worth) Damn!! When I went to bed it was 96-95%.. But when I woke up it was 86%!! I just added about a half inch of perlite more and rewet the perlite throughly.. don't know what more to do really..

You could try taping over some holes to help seal in more humidity. There's a myth floating around that taping over holes won't raise humidity but it really will. It's also possible that your hygrometer is a little screwy. There are a few easy ways you can test it. If you have a little damp perlite to spare, pour some in a small tupperware container, put in your hygrometer and then seal with the lid. Your hygrometer should read 99% in that environment.

Could try uncovering all the holes and setting up an oscillating fan in the room.

It mantain 99% humidty for 8 hours straight after I entirely re-wet the perlite and misted and fanned. Now I opened it for a light misting and fanning session and just after doing this the humidity dropped to 95-96%

I don't understand how a fan on a FC where humidity is an issue even makes sense? Keep misting lightly, keep fanning lightly. Shoot for perfection and do your best. Keeping in mind that this is a hobby and there are learning curves. Pay close attention to all that you do because this is an invaluable learning opportunity. Soon you will look back and giggle. Then space out then giggle some more and maybe yawn and wonder where did that hour go?????????????????????????

95-96% humidity is fine for pinning and growth. In my climate with 45 - 50% ambient humidity, >99% humidity is a tall order even with a shotgun FC. My humidity sometimes has trouble getting above 91%. The solution i used was to just spray the top layer and mix up the perlite a little keeping it loose and fluffy each day. 4-5 inches is perfect.
I also run a homemade ultrasonic on a 2 min timer every 2 out of 9 minutes. This helps to sustain the perlite's capacity almost indefinitely through the whole grow and bump up those humidity levels to the >97% area.

The only thing i can think of is your holes are too big, or your heating your terrarium.
95%+ is ideal and know of many people that have it work great and have an ambient humidity less than yours. Make sur eyour hygrometer is reading the inside humidity and not the outside. You want it away from any holes in your terrarium.. Also if its up high, its not going to be as humidity as down neerer the perlite. A good place is level with your cakes but make sure its not over any holes.

Veda.. you might be on too something with the hygrometer suggestion.. The holes ARE NOT too big... 1/4" just like the tek suggests... I'm not heating the terrarium, room temperature over here ranges from 80-88.. As of know it's back too 98-99%, but yeah I'll try placing the hygrometer in a hole less place... Maybe my room temperature dries the perlite fast.. If that the problem, I'm OK with re wetting it daily...

is your perlite packed? make sure it's loose and fluffy, rake your hands through it, that perlite will stay hydrated for a month or more, make sure it's elevated off what ever surface you put it on.
