I personally like temperature controllable dehydrators. If it is... its perfect, but if there is no heat control, I think they get to damn hot.

They give the dried mushrooms a baked mushroom taste, it's kinda weird. Lets not start the potency debate though.

i think i can put it on a timer if it starts getting too hot. i dont think that model has any kind of adjustment. ill try it out and post my findings.

I run mine on a timer. If you have a thermometer with a remote probe, it's really easy to figure out what settings you want. I do 60 mins on, 30 off usually.

Oh, I just use the little analog dial timers from Home Depot or wherever. Cost about $7-10. I've got several, I use them for all sorts of things. The ones that do 15-minute increments are harder to find, but not much more expensive.

Just open it up and clip the wires leading to the heating element.

That works great if they're not in series... otherwise you just stopped the whole thing from working.

It shouldn't hurt potency unless it gets above like 180 degrees, right?

Psilocybin and Psilocin are both fairly fragile molecules, I would speculate degradation begins far below 180F. My concern, and reason for ultimately using alternative methods to dry fresh mushrooms, is that dehydrators use heat to assist in dehydration. This could be damaging to the Psilocybin and or Psilocin within. Instead, I use a desiccant such as damp-rid and a Tupperware type container with steel lattice to support materials being dried.

Hey! I said lets not start that. Here is my view. It is opinion based on information read/learned/heard here and from other studies: You will hurt the potency regardless when drying. You're oxidizing the psilocin. Heat speeds up oxidization, so people claim that you lose *more* potency, but guess what. If I heat dry something in 4 hours or air dry it at room temp in 24 hours, don't you think the amount oxidized ends up being the same? I do, because both sets end up DRY. Now, as far as temps? I have heard of them being barbecued and cooked on open flames (temps well above 200*F) with no noticeable potency loss. So I would have to say no, above 180 should not hurt it any more than normal.

if one gram of dried cubes will have an effect after dried with some heat (dehydrator, toaster oven) then i would say that for all practical purposes heat drying is fine.
@ Doc_T
have you eaten small amounts of stuff youve dried w/ a dehydrator and had an effect? large amounts and had a massive effect?
what more do you want?
if he responds im sure we can all trust his opinion. i do.
i do know however that the fresh things i ate the other day, first time eating fresh, F*NG kicked my ass. i dont think ive tripped harder than that on mushrooms. EGO DEATH. seven or eight small mushrooms. some fresh some partially dried. im guessing it would have been 3.5 dried? impossible to tell. i diddnt weigh it out.
although ive also never really had a problem having a good time on one or two grams dry.

i agree. I love fresh mushrooms. There is nothing better. i wouldn't even be chiming in except for the fact that the only time I get ego loss lately is from fresh ones. I think it's under-rated and good. I have yet to have the problem of bulk drying and storage because I am hungry and eat a lot of mushrooms. edible and the like. I want to serve a serious question to you all. What does it matter? If you start with the right intentions and finish strong, well eat them fresh or dry...... who can qualify this bullshit? If we can cook them over charcoal or gas and still enjoy them ???????? Is this another drying and potency thing? Eat them as fast as you can pick them and then when you are full, tell me about the (rabbits) drying them.

yeah i diddnt intend this thread to be a heat/potency/fresh/dried debate. it just went there. i simply wanted to know if the mr. coffee was a good deal for $20 bucks, and if it would work decent. i think thats cheap and will serve me well in the future.
plus regulating it with a timer will limit any heat degradation if there is any (still dont know). ill use my discretion. im sure ill figure it out.
one point.... a cracker dry mushroom that is slightly less potent because of drying with heat is way more effective than any fresh mushroom or any amount of fresh mushrooms... six months from now.

I have a dehydrator similar to this one and was concerned about the heat. I use a fan that blows directly on the dehydrator to keep the temps down. I get temps ~ 110-120F.
