Fermenting?
    #1056628 - 11/15/02 08:19 PM (14 years, 24 days ago)

I'm justa newbie growin the first time. I'm growing p-mex in grow bags (2L rye grass seed/1L H2O). Colonization is apparantly going fine but there is an odor emanating from the bag that reminds me of fermentation. I know you ferment grain -w- yeast to make beer but do shrooms do this as well? Or is this a sign of contamns. thx

I have had a mild odor akin to fermentation before, but those jars turned out perfectly. I would give a bit more time and check to see if the odor turns more rancid or gross than just "yeasty". Sometimes the volatile gases given off by the mycelium will smell strange, especially if it is your first time growing.
good luck

was it sweet smelling? i mixed my substrate this last time like a month ago my second time doing this, and i waited like 2-3 days to boil it. and when i did i opened the foil and smelt the air coming from the substrate it smelt sweet. like just 5 days ago i opened one jar that had no growth, i smelt the substrate and it smelt like alcohol something fermenting. i think it depends on how you prepared your substrate, onyl one of my jars contaminated, and one of them is doing really well... i have to check on it.

yep, there is sweetish sort of smell to it as well. The yeasty smell has gone away a bit, and now there is a sorta minty? maybe? smell. Kinda hard to describe. The smell is not an edible mushroom sort of scent. The rye grass seems to be colnising very well though.
