ok here is the deal.. I have grown before so I am not completely new to all of this but... I couldnt find any BRF anywhere.. I decided to use rye flour instead. I inoced my cakes 4 days ago and I noticed one had a dark blotch on it almost like dried blood color(hard to tell weather black or not) so I decided I would go ahead and clean it out and cut deep around it with a serile fork but when I opened the bottle(half pint) it reeked I mean I almost gagged.. is this normal for a rye substrate?? I cleaned it out and the doesnt seem to be anymore and the rizm. fuzzy white is still growing strong.. should I just have more patiance to see if it makes it through or should I just toss it and not take the chance?? like I said I have done this before but then again it was on the other side of the US a few years ago oh yea inoced w/ B+ by the way if that helps any any info or sugg. please thanks all everypone here has been real helpful no pics yet cam is busted right now

Never mess with contaminated cakes. It isn't worth the health risk. Some contaminations can have devestating effects on your health. Get rid of it. Don't breath it. Don't touch it.
Good luck

If it smells like fermenting, then it probably is fermenting, which would mean a yeast. Best not to mess with it and toss it.

if you're illin and you only got a few cakes and no inoculum for more, then go ahead and see if the myc can take over, but I wouldn't be too excited about eating the fruits from that cake. If you got a lot of jars then toss it, and be careful smelling that shit.

that's most probably a yeast infection. if at any time you smell something odd, toss it. if you let a contam gewt oput of hand you can both get sick (aspergiloma, menengitis, or worse), and compromise future growing attempts. better safe than sorry.
