Hey everyone i was wanting to know if anyone has ever used miracle grow perlite before and if it contaminates or harms the mushrooms.
I saw that the perlite had miracle grow in it.
it has: 0.04% nitrogen
0.01% phosphate
0.06% potash
I dont know if the chemicals will remain in the moisture drops from the humidity or not.
Thanks.

I think I use that kind, and it was never an issue... I'm sure that when water evaps out of the perlite, it leaves behind the nutes.
I think it's for when you mix Perlite with soil that the nutes matter.

oh alright. well thats good to know. ill make sure that the cakes are not directly touching the perlite anyway.
ill probably just put them on the lid and clear the perlite away from them a little bit.
it should be alright as long as there is no contact.
ill be sure to wash it out before use though.

Perlite shouldn't touch the cake in any case... too much wet in one spot.
Make sure you have good air exchange, and have fun!

Everywhere I looked for perlite this time they only had the mirical grow brand, I didn't buy any of it, because it just did not feel right. I like hoffman or scotts brand perlite. Since I was getting close to needing to re-up on vermiculite anyway, I made the trek out to the nursery where I get my fine grade verm and got the monster jumbo bag of hoffman perlite (2 cubic feet), it was only 20 bucks and they gave me a coupon for 3 bucks off my next purchase! The two cubic feet equals out to just a little over seven of the smaller bags, I think, or it could be just under, either way, it is a sweet deal.

A guy in another post had a very good suggestion for using MG perlite, so I'll quote it here.

With your pearlite in the sgfc you can take it outside and flood it repeatedly with a hose if that is an option or you can do it in a bathtub or shower. Consider a screen of some sort over the drain for you will get some pearlite blow-by from the holes in th fc. my 2 cents.

RR once said to never use miracle grow perlite. It can sometimes create algae that can allow contaminates to mess with your cakes more easily.
I get my natural perlite from a plant/outdoor store. I think the brand is along the lines of "hoffmans" or something like that. They also sell vermiculite and other things. Found my gypsum their too.

Yeah, I'm really nervous about the miracle grow stuff, found a distributor on ebay and bought a 2cuft. bag for $19 shipped, so hopefully I'll be set in a few days. Guess I'll just have to take this MG shite back to the hardware store now.

Well, the stuff I found on ebay is pure perlite, no added chemicals, and I got a HUGE amount for a fraction of what an equal amount of the MG stuff would have run. All in all, I'm really glad I did it.

Again, after repeated use of miracle grow brand pearlite I have had no problems. No algea, nothing. The holes in the SG FC make an excellent 'sieve' or colander and I find it very easy to rehydrate it between use by flooding it repeatedly with a hose or in the shower. And I have to assume that each time I do this, the additives are diminished. If I had the choice, I would have used pearlite w/o additives but I don't. I honestly believe you will be fine.

Sucks to have to pay that much for perlite. I get 4cubic feet for $23.00 at the hydroponics store. It's the only thing I feel funny buying, becasue of it's size, and the bag took up the whole backseat of my car. ~Pixie~
