I also agree that the average 'consumer' will not be able to tell the difference between cube 'strains'.
For example, lots of people ask me for the ones that look a certain way because they liked the trip they received from the last ones that looked that way. Like, if they ate some mature open-cap mushrooms and just happened to have a good time, they placebo-affect themselves into thinking that what they ate is a different variety from the closed cap younger fruitbodies.
Then they will ask why I mix the 'strains' up when they receive both open and closed caps, wtf. I have to explain this to some people, which is kind of weird.

I would love to make mixtures of different varieties of mushrooms, (cubensis + mexicana + Pan. cyan. + azurescens + etc.)
Plus, with the more potent ones in the mix,

who said anything about not being honest?...
I just want to try the mix to see if the combination of varying alkaloid concentrations would make a noticeable difference in the experience. Different species and genera in the mix? Not necessarily changing the size of the dosage, but mixing different proportions?
Plus, I'm always honest about what people are getting into, probably more honest than most... why make stuff up, when what you have to offer is high quality?

just putting this out there as an observation I've had, looking for any similar results... I also, may have already missed someone posting this very comment, so, in that case, this is just another member adding to validity of that statement
In regards to the color of the cap (red, orange, brownish, cream, gold, etc.) I have noticed that while working with the same 'strain'(Burma), the fruiting temp. seems to be an easily controlled variable. And when I compare grows, I have observed the darker golds, browns, and deep red colors during the "lower-than-average" fruiting temps. The lighter creams, yellows and marshmallow colors occur while fruiting in higher temps for me.
Of course the pins are always darker than the maturing fruit bodies, but I'm referring to the time period between (say, 12 hrs before the veil tears up-through when the cap is perfect for printing).
Just something I have experienced...

I've noticed that temperature can affect the cap color slightly... this may not be what is happening to you though, just an observation
higher temps. = lighter colored caps lower temps. = darker color, slower growing
and by lower, I mean less than 65 F and by higher, I mean over 75+ F
just something I have noticed after various grows using Burma...

this thread is fun to read (been catching up on this one)...

just a quick point of ref... mushrooms don't have male/female stuff going on like plants and animals... right?
so, they would be like eunuchs... but with a and the ability to clone... if anything... lol and the only way they could propagate is if a bunch of eunuchs formed together and fruited
either that, or the myc. is a gang of hard-core lesbians scissoring their way through life.... until, they realize they need to build 's if they want to have offspring... or something like that
I'm just making stuff up here
