Your First Time Jamming

It was a bit like having sex for the first time for me.  I was really excited about it, but very nervous as well.  My first jam turned out pretty awesome, I thought.

It helped that the guy I was playing with was an excellent guitar player, definitely.  I met the guy cause he lived with a buddy I used to work with.  We hung out at his place a few times and we drank and smoked together, had some good friend chemistry.  Finally one day I saw his bedroom door was open and noticed in his room a couple guitars, lots of pedals, and a few amps.  I asked him about it and he was way pumped to show me his stuff.  He had a looper pedal with a bunch of saved tracks and played stuff off there.  I loved it, and was way pumped.  We made plans to jam, and he lugged his gear to my place.

When he got there we got everything set up, then each packed a bowl and got nice and high.  After the bowl we were a little dry mouthed, so we took a gander at my liquor cabinet.  We both took a few big pulls off a new bottle of Wild Turkey whiskey (whiskey is the best for jamming) and brought it into the living room with us.  We played for probably 4 hours without stopping for more than a few seconds to fiddle with equipment.  It was just awesome.  At first my nervousness got the best of me, and it took us awhile to get moving in the right direction, but after maybe 5 minutes of feeling each other out we just locked in and jammed a psychedelic space rock that would have melted hippies brains on contact.

Afterward we jammed pretty regularly, never really coming up with distinct songs, but hell we were playing along with a drum machine.  We'd made plans to try and start up a band, but had no luck whatsoever finding a drummer, so that kinda fizzled.  He just moved away a few months ago to Montana, probably never to return to this college town, at least not while I'm living here.  I was sad to see him go. 

Even though we never established songs to play regularly, I think we both grew a lot as musicians in those months we had jamming together.  Working with other musicians is so invigorating for the creative process.  I think just having some time dedicated to just letting music flow is really, really important too.  You hear a lick your friend is playing, think of something to complement it, and just let it build back and forth.  When I'm not playing with other people I feel like my stuff starts to get stale, like I play very similar things a lot, and have trouble coming up with new sequences of notes.  When someone else is there to build off it opens so many creative pathways for me.

I bought a drum set because I've always wanted to play drums and my three other friends had guitar, bass, and keys on lock. That and I think picking up the drums was easier.

We're all pretty bad though :lol: I've never taken lessons or anything so I can only play simple rhythms, and for some reason I fuck up tempo more than I expected to which is extremely disappointing to me.

We're better now than the first time. The first time we played me and the kid who plays guitar bashed out a No Age song because we like 'em and it's simple, and then we all covered Where Is My Mind (a little help from another friend on acoustic.) As far as original shit we've been getting better, but it's apparent our lack in music theory prevents us from doing anything that's actually good. I find it disappointing because I don't think we're all willing to put in the time to actually learn, so it's a wall.

We also obviously have "creative differences." We all like the same music in general, but I can tell just when we're playing we all want to go a completely different route. That can be extremely frustrating, and has lead to us all being pissed a few times.

The bassist dropped out of school in winter (we started playing shit together in spring), and went home for good Memorial Day weekend. The guitarist left for summer last weekend. So it's me and the keys player. Thankfully that's enough to dick around in the summer, and also thankfully the keyboardist is extremely creative. He's been making pretty quality tunes on FL for years now, and he just got a USB condenser mic and has been recording live instrument loops and sampling them.

I should definitely take some lessons though, I enjoy playing even with my limited ability.

Edit: Shit, two of 'em posted in the Indie Album thread and I think they lurk MAL for musics, I hope they don't read this and get mad I think we suck :lol:

Yeah, I remember the first jam session. It was with a buddy I met at work who seemed to have a pretty good taste in music so we naturally decided to jam out together.

At first it was a little awkward, we were both young guitarists and new friends, so we were a little shy. But then I just put my head down, played some droning bass line. Ever so slowly I remember him coming in with some melody on guitar. It started to give me chills, but I just kept looking at my bass to keep from killing the moment. After several minutes of just going with it we both stopped at the same moment and just started laughing.

We still jam regularly and that was over 3 years ago. :super:

I totally agree with the "let the music flow" statement. It's so rejuvenating as a musician to get lost into something of your own creation in the moment of it's birth.

It was fun.  Like others have said it was awkward, and slow going at first, but once you get into the groove it all flows smoothly.

weird as heelll jus switching between keyboards and guitar i actually had a recording of it my dude must have it somewhere tho its pretty funny i make up for my lack of skills with really airy jams and sometimes we're just litterally hitting stuff so it sounds like a bunch of monkeys trapped in a room that dont know how to work the doorknob lol

Ha.. My first jam was amazingly retarded.. a bunch of 15 year olds playing simple riffs and bass lines.. our drummer was a noobie as well.. but it was a blast and we got in a flow. Good memorys.:laugh:

that's about like how i got into noise music. some kid came over to our house w/ a drum machine one day, i got called upstairs to where some kids were at to "write pop songs", and none of us knew how to do that, so it ended up being noisy free improv with a group of about eight. some of us would play real instruments, and some people would be on metal objects, or shutting windows, or throwing boxes around the room, you know. we did that pretty regularly, recording onto tape. the only rule was that you couldn't talk about trivial shit while we were playing. nonsense, singing or storytelling was fine. those were some of the best times of my life. people from that group ended up moving all over the country, but the legacy lives on.

now i jam on an 8track by myself, writing songs by wrapping parts around each other as i go. it's one of my favorite pastimes. =]

lol its wasnt really lke that but sometimes when this kid came thru and mashed on the drums itd sound like that but he does that with everyinstrument i was jus tryna say it was really akward like if we were making music for a psycadelic horror movie itd be awful lol but we DID record something

My first jam was a success. Me and a guy that is a toothless crackhead now, got together and jammed to some old Slayer songs for about an hour.

He didn't have anything to eat or drink so we went to a store down the road and stole 2 packages of fig newtons, a gallon of iced tea and a carton of smokes.

We spent the rest of the day talking about burying cats up to their necks in the ground and pitching horse shoes at them. Not that we did that, just interesting conversation.

I started on drums at a young age and would jam with local kids. We were all about 13-14... no nervousness because we all sucked balls. Throughout high school I was the only one really dedicated enough... I played with a bunch of flakes, no one really took it seriously so I began learning guitar, bass, and piano so I could compose my own shit. Those days were awesome.

I remember being nervous at age 19 trying out for my first real band, but like you say... eventually those feelings pass and you get to know each other and play with flawlessly to them. Less than a year after trying out we had our first studio e.p. recorded.
