Advice welcomed for my first grow in 7 years.
    #10388889 - 05/23/09 11:28 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Hi All! I welcome advice from pros with my current direction. I am experienced but a bit rusty after a 7 year break. Here's the plan.

Strain: Penis Envy

I plan to follow Cybers WBS myco-bag Tek to a T.

Then case with Ryche's 50/50 Plus Tek using a Martha.

Products and Tek's have changed since I last visited the Shroomery, keep up the good work and keep experimenting!

Again I welcome any knowledgeable advice on any part of the operation from strain to casing and finally fruiting chamber....

Thanks!

Probably will but INVEST IN A GLOVEBOX
substrate: use Horse manure, PE thrives!
but coir/coffee work too
get a nice big martha. bigger surface area, bigger harvest

Thanks for the advice so far.

My main ??'s are with the strain because I guess it is fairly new or at least to me.

Also I have never cased before but looks like it is worth the effort.

I am kinda questionable about the martha but I do need a pretty hands off approach to fruiting. I will check out the monotub and monobucket teks.

Monotubs seem to be the preferred method of many lately. Mine's coming along quite nicely.

Haven't grown pe myself, but I hear it can be slow as hell, but kicks out some major shrooms. From pics I've seen, most don't get real dense pinsets from it, but huge dense fruits.

If you need to do some research click the link in my signature that says Links for anyone and everyone.

I've got 3 tubs of pe fruiting as we speak.
3 things you need to know about pe:

1: PE is very potent, whatever dose you normally take, take 1/3 or 1/2 of that with pe.  I can't really recommend eatting more then 2 grams dry unless you're an experienced tripper or can really handle your drugs :p

2: PE loves LOTS of fae.

3: In my experience, it colonizes a little slower then other strains (atleast the stuff i'm working with) and I tend to get far less yield then other strains - however due to the potency it ends up being 'more' once that's factored in.

I prefer monotubs, but whatever method you use, don't skimp on the fresh air :-D

It looks like monotub is the way to go for sure.

noggins tek seems a bit old, not to say ineffective, but is there anything new to monotubs that I should know. And before anyone yells SEARCH! I'm asking for a link or some information from you guys because some of you are probably like I was 7 years ago and LIVE on the shroomery so a lot of time can be saved (by me) not having to go through 500 links on monotubs to find the most useful info.

thanks in advance!

I am pretty much following Monstermitch's tek here. LC -> Grain Spawn -> Monotub

I will be asking questions as I move from stage to stage and I hope this post can answer alot of questions for newbs too.

Stage 1: Liquid Culture Creation

    1. Is it really worth the effort to use light dry malt, dextrose, gypsum & charcoal in a liquid culture over karo syrup? If so where is a good source to find these ingredients?

    2. Is it better to use tyvek on the lids over the material that the sponsors sell or is it the same thing?

    3. Where do you get micropore tape?

    4. Is the advantage of a magnetic stirrer worth the cost over just swirling the jars by hand? I imagine that the use of charcoal is to provide something for the mycelium to hold onto and also to give some abrasion when stirring.

    5. The tek doesn't say but I imagine that the syringe that is filled with LC is sterile. Pressure cooker?

I do plan to keep good records and take pics to share with the community. I may even update the tek with more pics and information about supplies needed.

I did some comparisons here, the results speak for themselves.

I got bad results from micropore tape, even triple layering it.  Tyvek is much better.

I just swirl mine, make sure you use a 14 or 16 gauge needle or it'll clog up.

You can get away with boiling, but I rinse then pressure cook mine.

Thanks spongiform, your help with the LC was great.

Stage 1 was a great success using Sugar in the Raw. 21 days has 6 jars of healthy growth with no contams.

Now on to Stage 2 which is inoculating WBS in filter patch bags. Currently I am planning to soak for 12 hours then PC for 1.5 hours. Again mainly following Monstermitch's tek, no offense to him though but I have found that he tends to go OCD a bit. I don't want to screw this step up though, so is their a consensus that 12 hours is enough to soak, then a good rinse before the WBS going into the bags for PCing?
