Its really just a headtrip.
How many times have you been hiking with a friend, and relied on them to save you in some unforseen circumstance.
Once you conquer the fear of facing the unknown alone, the better off you are.
(although i can relate to where your comming from. - i imagine the more you do it the easier it gets.)

I spent 3 months down in New Zealand, and 1/3 to 1/2 of that time was spent out in the backcountry, mostly by myself. The longest stretch of time I went without seeing anyone else was 5 days, which I really enjoyed. I like being by myself out there, I was usually disappointed when I would come across people on the trails.

I prefer to camp without a human partner, but I sure sleep better knowing my canine companions are curled up next to the tent to chase away all the scary things that move around in the night. They even pack in their own food on the long trips. RR

Beautiful dogs RR. I'm looking forward to having a pair of some good hunting dogs to keep me company.

Im planning two trips this summer two weeks each.. One to Yosemite and another to Mt Shasta..
So far I cant get anyone to go with me so I think Ill have to do them solo.. Good thing about Yosemite is that your never alone till you get several miles in, even then you can only camp in very few places and often find others camping near you. No such thing as solo camping in the main camp grounds at both Yosemite and Shasta. They will assign you to a site with other people.
I'm not sure if Ill be able to afford the climb to the peak of Mt Shasta this summer so I might just go for a week and take an unguided tour in the non snowey areas.

I always thought that you would be better off without a dog, at least in areas with bears or cougars. They can drive a bear to attack that would otherwise leave you alone, and I don't see how they would help with anything besides a possible attack from some rapist hermit living in the backcountry. Not that their company isn't nice to have, however.

My dogs pictured above are a rotti and a rotti/black lab mix(smaller one-female) The female has put every bear she sees up a tree since she was six months old. That dog is fearless. The larger, older male always barks and follows the female once she starts chasing them. We live in bear and cougar country, and it's their jobs to keep the bears out of our beehives, orchard and gardens.
Don't take a skillet licker type dog up in the mountains though. They'll attract bears, and then when under attack will run right between your legs so you can protect them. RR
