Resting heart rate is 120-130, time to see a doctor?
    #10541803 - 06/20/09 09:41 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Now I believe I have General Anxiety Disorder (anxiety attacks at times, anxiousness, yawning, high heart rate), and I have been dealing with it for about two months now. I kept thinking that my elevated heart rate was due to overtraining (which it partially could have been), but I am not overtraining now and I finally took it yesterday and it was 130. Now because of this when I smoke weed I at times feel pretty fucked up, I can only imagine how fast my heart gets after ripping a bong. I bought some b-12 (5000mcg) and it seems to reduce it a tad. I really should go to the DR. though right? I wish I could take something to slow my heart rate, but I really don't want to be on any real medication. I am very opposed to treating symptoms and not the real problem. I hate this fucking anxiety, I miss enjoying weed like I used too. Panic attacks really fuck you up for awhile.

Another question, would higher levels of dopamine cause me to have CEV's? After having sex and being high I usually get some crazy visuals, not mushroom level quality, but they are there. I took a melatonin last night before bed and that cranked them up, I really thought I was going crazy.

Were you high when you took the reading? Some would be surprised how much weed can raise it. I have GAD (General Anxiety Disorder/Panic Disorder), and heart wise my rate only goes up during an attack, but it flip flops (palpitations). If in doubt, go to the doc.

Ya I would probably recommend going to a doctor.  That doesn't sound healthy.

It gets higher when I am high, but no the reading was taken during sobriety. Its at around 110 right now. If I get a perscription what will it entail? Can I still smoke on anti-anxiety medicine?

Damn dude, if you've been doing physical training and are in good shape your heart rate should be SUBSTANTIALLY lower.  About half of what your sober resting heart rate would be perfect if you're athletic, if not a little higher would be fine.  But, yes, I would see a doctor.  If it's related to anxiety they will most likely put you on a benzo since your heart rate (and presumably bp) are so high.  Valium is the most likely choice.  They might try to put you on an SSRI first though, but most of those are ketones of amphetamines or amphetamines that are highly sertinogenic, so those would only raise your pulse unless you calmed way down.

Long story short, see a doctor.  You've basically got tachycardia 24/7.  And, almost all anti-anxieties or CNS depressants are okay to smoke on.  Just expect it to get a little trippy with some of them.

Oh, and I'm not saying all amphetamines are stimulants, but the only one I can think of that gets prescribed that isn't stimulating of the CNS would be wellbutrin

It wouldnt surprise me if they put you on Prozak. They LOVE to start with that shit. Dont EVER take that shit. It gives you limp dick. If they put you on a beta blocker, it will put you on your ass for a few days when you take it, but once you get used to it, its  Im just rambling from my own experiences.

If you need xanax, then its not gonna make a difference in your highs. I have to eat a xanax after severe smoking or double dose while tripping, just to stay "normal".

So in a person who say needs xanas its just bringing them to baseline? Opposed to someone taking it for recreation which would put them in an entirely different place?

Lemme put it from my experience. I feel the anxiety building (increases heart rate, dizziness, difficulty breathing) before the attack. If I dont take a Xanax, it proceeds to....
Heart racing (170+bpm) with palpitations (heart stops beating for a couple seconds). Then I start to get tunnel vision, as the blackness in my peripheral vision grows. There is a feeling of sudden and impending doom. Pains shoot up my jaw, down my arms, from my chest. There is tingling.

But if I take a Xanax, it stops at "a general feeling of anxiety". Getting high after taking a xanax I didnt need just makes me feel a lil dopey.

Your anxiety is much greater than mine then. I moreso get an intense fear of "I'm going to freak out again". I have only had maybe 3 or 4 panic attacks, with the two I had being very intense. Basically I felt like I was tripping out of nowhere and I had a very intense sensation of dejavu. After my last one I felt that derealization for what seemed like days. I haven't had an attack since, but its as if I get high sometimes I feel like its going to happen, I start to have those "waves" of anxiety and difficulty breathing. Either way I need to get it checked out, thank you much for your help man.

Hm, he thinks that I may have a thyroid issue, which does include symptoms of anxiety. Going to take some tests on Monday, I'd rather have this than anxiety disorder.

Ya, I'd definitely not smoke weed until you get this straightened out.

It used to do this to me, I'd smoke and my heart would pound out of my chest and make very abnormal popping noises. Suffice it to say, I stopped but it eventually went back to normal.

Alright, sounds like you've got tachycardia that is being irritated by your generalized anxiety disorder and fear. Tachycardia works alongside GAD and many people who have GAD also have Tachycardia. The thing is, when you are thinking about checking your heart rate, it's much more likely to go up because of your fears that it will be high. I'm not saying that your tachycardia is not real, it likely is, but many times simple lifestyle changes and the recognition that your own fears may be disturbing your condition may be enough. You do need to see a doctor to possibly get perscribed a low dose anti-anxiety medicine, like zoloft.

However, there are other more immediate things you can do to help your condition out. Eat foods high in potassium, magnesium, and selenium... very good foods for this are mustard greens and spinach. Lower your animal intake. I'm a vegetarian, having suffered from the same two conditions you have mentioned (Tachycardia and anxiety), and my vegetarian diet has significantly improved my quality of life. I don't get nearly the same amount of chest pains anymore, and my heart rate is lower. Walk a lot, keep processed foods out of your diet, and take a good vitamin supplement. Practice meditation, drink green tea, and enact as many healthy lifestyle changes as you can. It took me a good dose of LSD to actually enact all of these changes in my own life, but I can say that I am entirely glad that I did.

You can beat these problems. I still recommend going to your doctor, but remember that heart problems are often systematic, not localized, when you are young. You're putting lots of stress and strain on your heart, and you are oxidizing your body very quickly... especially if you do drugs that have stimulating properties more than the regular population of people. Treat your body systematically, and your heart health will improve.

Thank you for the very informative post. My heart rate was MUCH lower at the Doctor (90), making me think that a lot of it might just be in my head. I am not a skinny kid with tons of energy though and not that that is the only sign of hyperthyroidism, it seems to be an important one. I suppose only time will tell, but my diet definitely could be much better. I eat animals all day and not enough plants. Meditation has been hard recently because of the elevated heart rate, but I still do think its very important. I'm not sure what to think, I suppose only time will tell. Thank you all though for the input.

And where does Marijuana fall into this? I do not want to seem like a druggie, Marijuana is the only substance I take, but I do enjoy it. I do not need it, but I think of it as a good friend that I can hangout with anytime. Sometimes I am fine when I smoke, at other times I am fearful of what will happen.

Call up your hospitals advice nurse number. They will tell figure out the reason tell you if its important to see a doctor and set you up with an appointment. Its the simplest thing and it seems like no on on here ever considers it.

Keep your smoking sessions small and light. If it upsets your GAD, stops moking. If it calms you down and helps you with your GAD, smoke... but again, keep the smoking low. Just go for threshold, one or two hits.

Yeah that is what I have been doing. Any reason why I am getting so high so fast? I only need a hit or two because I feel that I get high incredibly fast. I have been attributing it to an elevated heart rate, but is that correct?

I just want to thank everyone again. I just had a nice long meditation session, sometimes you just need to reassure yourself that everything will be okay. Here's to knowing I will have a good time with weed tonight and with my friends. Whatever comes I will deal with it. Knowing that Green Tea doesn't increase your heart rate is nice too, I do miss it dearly
