Colombian Cocaine Harvest Drops 28 Percent, UN Drug Office Says

By Jonathan Tirone

June 19 (Bloomberg) -- Colombia’s cocaine production in 2008 dropped the most in a decade after fewer farmers grew the plants because of falling coca leaf prices and tougher law enforcement, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reported.

Cocaine production fell 28 percent to 430 metric tons (947,987 pounds) in 2008 and coca farmers cut cultivation by 28 percent, to 81,000 hectares (200,155 acres), the UN said today in an e-mail. Around 20,000 fewer farmers planted the narcotic because of a lower farm-gate value, the report said.

Colombia’s cocaine decline lowers the Andean country’s harvest to levels last seen in 2000, said Antonio Maria Costa, who heads the UN agency. It’s a “remarkable achievement,” he said. The global cocaine market generates around $320 billion in revenue annually, the UN estimates.

Cocaine cultivation in Bolivia and Peru rose 6 percent and 4.5 percent respectively. The two countries may be able to produce an additional 400 metric tons of cocaine, according to the report.

I highly doubt this has much, if any, bearing on what agencies have done to try and curb this. Looks like other areas are picking up some of the slack. We could also use their own logic against them and say that certain drugs go in cycles, this one is just in a down cycle right now.

Did you know America ranks the lowest in education but the highest in drug use?  It's nice to be number one, but we can fix that.  All we need to do is start the war on education.  If it's anywhere near as successful as our war on drugs, in no time we'll all be hooked on phonics.  ~Leighann Lord

either way, coke is still widely available in the U.S. is it possible that the meth has become a competitor and that drug enforcement efforts were pretty much obsolete? theres a good chance that people will still be blowing lines in the U.S, and that is (was)the whole point of throwing money at prohibition. hooray for columbias coca production drop but it just doesnt translate to the streets of the U.S.save the money for education and fuck columbia's coca production drop. we've poisened their land enough already.

i think its true though, about the cycles. look at heroin. i read an article the other day where a sheriff in some county in PA said he's never seen it this bad (even the 70's).
