I think I should move on to quart jars!

pros:
1. larger yields, esp with casing 2. faster colonization times, typically 14-20 days 3. no verm needed 4. no flour needed
cons:
1. wont fit in pressure cooker, well maybe if I lay it horzontally 2. I could fit 7 of the 9 ounce jars or 2 of the 20 ounce jars. 3. much higher risk of contamination since no dry verm layer 4. tricky to sterilize since grains have hard outer coating. 5. many grains have fungicide, my wwf is pratically organic. 6. complicated, easy to mess up.
each 9 ounce brf glass yields around a wet ounce, at least mine did of which I ate 24.3 grams and ignored the aborts, as I didnt know how hard id trip on my first trip anyway. I dont know if ill get 2nd flushes. I could case the cake and get 50% more shrooms but also much easier to contam since I handle the cake when breaking it also there is more space for molds to get into. I could prepare 4 to 8 more 9 ounce wwf jars each 7 to 14 days so that way ill be able to trip every 7-14 days and with 4 to 8 cakes ill have enough to trip plus more which I can put in fridge or make spore prints. im also using two 20 ounce jars to see how long it takes and the yields I get. It may only take an extra week and produce twice the yields, thus making it worthwhile. I am actually thinking of using quart and even half gallon jars. can brf or wwf jars be sterilized using the oven at 400 degrees dry heat, since I would need one huge PC?

What's wwf? Grain in quart jars are not really that complicated, especially if you use Six Tango's wild birdseed tek (don't know if its actually his tek, he just posts it alot, so I'll assume) .

I have to put my jars horizontally in my pressure cooker. Hasn't caused any problems so far.

wwf=whole wheat flour. thanks ill ask 6T about the tek, im sure he can guide me thru. I can get birdseed anyday at walmart, but the problem is, do they use fungicide and if yes, does it harm birds or just fungi? where do I get such a large pressure cooker for quart jars? do jars come even larger than quart size?
"if you only got one flush learn to get more"
using wwf, which I hear is less nutritionous than brf, this may have caused the slow colonization time, smaller yields and only one flush before its exhausted.
"I have to put my jars horizontally in my pressure cooker. Hasn't caused any problems so far."
how many can you fit? I put two 20 ounce jars diagonally using 3 layers of towels to support the jars. Im afraid they will crack or leak if horzontal! I could look for a 40 quart pressure cooker on ebay and buy quart or half gallon jars
"Stick with the PF tek for now, you're still on your first grow right?"
yup, well actually I just made 6 more jars on 11-11, refer to the grow log form.

keep searching ebay, you can find a better deal. You don't HAVE to use quarts when working with grain, infact a 1/2 pint of grain is much better than a 1/2 pint of brf or wwf. As for birdseed having fungicides, I don't think so, I use pennington's wild birdseed. Works good for me.

the oils in sunflower easily contaminate. oh should I get seeds without shells? is it better if all of them are the same species? which seed type is best? can the oven be used to sterilize brf jars?

What do you mean that the oils from sunflower seeds contaminate? Where did you read this? They didn't contaminate my fully colonized jar of birdseed. And why the hell would you want to use the oven to sterilized brf? Why not use your pressure cooker or a pot to boil them.

ribbit and someone else said so. so your saying an oven is not good? what if I want to use large glasses that dont fit? will an oven work or not? I could also use it in my PC with the lid off and cook without pressure.

You could always find a impulse sealer on ebay for less than $40 and do your grains in bags. My squirrel does not even bother with jars anymore, and a spawn bag is like 15 cents so there is no issue with tossing them if something goes bad. Plus I am sure you can load at least 4 in the PC you have now.

I could use http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=732840663 and stick it in the oven to sterilize and have a mother cake with 9" shooms
