Holes vs. No holes in FC * 1
    #10540768 - 06/20/09 12:54 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Alright so last time I grew which was probably 2 to 3 years ago some people were using a shotgun FC but there was no proof that it helped in the grow. Now it appears that the shotgun FC does better than regular fanning multiple times a day.

So my question is... Has the shotgun now been ruled as a better method, out-dating the fanning method. Given with the shotgun fanning is still needed.

I have 3 small FC's with approx 4 cakes in each one. And 2 inches of perlite in each tub.

I'm game for trying the shotgun and all but I'm not using a hygrometer so I'm nervous about losing all my humidity...

Maybe I'll drill holes in one of the tubs with each strain (b+ and golden teachers). And after the first flush I could compare results.

Peace.

Yeah, it does seem that people prefer the Shotgun FC over the fanning method. It makes sense to me that more fresh air exchange provided by the holes would make for better results. I'm using the fanning method now on my current grow and plan on using a shotgun FC in a couple months for my next grow.

Fruiting chamber, where the shrooms grow.

I'm worried about 2 things humidity and contams. Last time I slowly lost my cakes one by one to trich. I'm assuming the trich spores came from me. And fanning I'd assume is what introduced it to  the FC. It seems that anthing floating in the room could get on the cakes a fuck it up with a shotgun. Is micropore tape or polyfil stuffed in the holes or is that optional.

I personally have had shit luck with cakes. I would try breakn them up and case them in small plastic pans that your ground beef comes in. I always get contams on exposed cakes. Clean your pans with peroxide and alcohol.

Fully colonized cakes are pretty resistant to contamination.  If your cakes got trich in the FC, they probably already had it and you just didn't know. Trich is white before it sporulates.

I would say no to the polyfill and micropore.  Polyfill would be the better option of the two, but neither are necessary.
