Aquarium Heater/incubator Question
    #1054103 -

Well, up untill now I have not been using an incubator at all. I stuck my jars out in the garage and they seem to be colonizing pretty well, but I decided it would be a good idea to build an incubator anyways. I've read all the faqs and various posts and whatnot, and I went to the petstore and found a 8" 75 watt heater that appeared to be perfect. Problem is, the heater is taller then any jar I can find. Is it ok to rest the heater on the bottom or will this cause problems....any suggestions? Btw the Incubator I am attempting to build is the styrafoam cooler with heater in a jar of water.

Go to a thrift stor and buy a cheap vase, one that will fit into your cooler.

hate to bring wal-mart up again... (gotta love that store)

go to the house wares, you can find single drinking glasses that are 9" tall.

i use that exact set up... also, go to the cooking utensils and they have a pyrex digital temp with a wire that you can run into the cooler... and set the lil meter right on top... =o)

good luck!

They might as well change Wal-mart's name to Myco-mart. In my area they sell everything but spores...

That would be the start of WalMart World Domination, but is there enough of a redneck market worldwide sustain the quality items like the Dale Earnhardt Racing Alarm Clock, cause no matter where you go in America, there is a strong enough market to support it.

I began to build an incubator with a fish tank heater and found it to be a hassle. I got a 4 watt reptile heating pad, the kind you're supposed to stick on the underside of an animals terrarium, and mounted it on a small rack inside a small styrofoam cooler.

The pad is supposed to bump the temp around 10 degrees over whatever room temp happens to be. I found that inside the cooler, temps rose by about 15 degree. I needed to dial down the temps a bit so I spliced in a rheostat. The incubator is on the smallish side, but it's working great as we speak.
