First grow- Check out my FC please =) *pics*
    #10528789 - 06/18/09 06:45 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hello!

My friend, John, who lives in a country legal to grow these mushrooms, emailed me this question.  I thought you guys could answer it best:

I have 10 colonizing PF tek jars.  They were inoculated about 12 days ago and the best one is 75% colonized, the rest about 15% less colonized, and the worse one only about 10% colonized.  I have been storing them in the closet in darkness, but recently got bored and made the FC.  I stuck them in there.

My first question: should I wait until I birth them to put them in the FC?

Here's a pic of the setup:

Basically, it's two Tupperware, the smaller one on the inside holding the rinsed perlite and jars, and the larger Tupperware holding the smaller Tupperware, suspended in water.  There is an air stone in the water to add humidity.  It is heated by a heating pad placed under the entire setup. Small holes are drilled in all around the box and scattered randomly on the 4 sides.  It's all sitting about 4 feet off the ground.

Second question:  Will I have to waft air into this setup to remove Co2 multiple times a day?  Could I/should I put a fan on this setup from across the room to aid air flow?

Thanks for looking, I know my friend will love any feedback.

Okay, I'm new here as well, but here is my critique.

1.  Take the jars out of the FC, the cakes don't need to go in there till they've been birthed.

2.  Get rid of the water in the bottom of the tub and drill more holes in the bottom, drill them in the lid as well.  You want them to be 2 inches apart on ALL sides. Only one tub is needed because you aren't going to be submersing the cakes in water, they'll be sitting on top of the damp perlite.

3.  The bottom of the tub needs approx. 4 to 5 inches of damp perlite in it.

4.  Assuming your jars have lids with inoculation holes poked in them, remove the foil from the jars.

That's just a cursory glance, for more info and a complete step by step video guide, check out RR's videos here

Good Luck!

Keep them away from light whilst colinizing, it might trigger pinning or something and its not good at an early stage.
Just my 2cents and i dont know if all that water and stuff is neccasary

this is the 2nd time ive had to correc this today. Light will not cause premature pinning and it can actually be benificial to have you jars exposed to light, particularly in the week consolidation.

Get your jars out of that tub, and just leave them colinising at room temp. tThe humidity will moisten your dry verm layer making it useless as a filter. Also you need your jars to breath while colinisng so the foil must be removed.

From John:

I took the jars out of the FC and removed the tinfoil lids.  I guess the best jar is now about 90% colonized, and it was only about 70% this morning. =)  I'm still unsure about the FC design, though.  Should I just use perlite and lose the water and everything?

Also, I was thinking about taking one of the jars and inoculating 4 other sterile jars with it in a plastic bag, and then dumping it into a aluminum foil container after it colonizes and throwing that in the FC with the other 9 cakes.  Just an idea since my FC is so big I have the space for it...Could I even do it now with a 60% colonized cake??

Does anyone suggest I do any casing?  I haven't really thought about that yet but read a ton about it..

and thank you all very much for the feedback!

edit:  It looks like I'm going to do the dunk and roll on all 10 cakes when I birth them. (one week after fully colonized)

As for your question on the Cake at 60%... let it colonize. Patience patience patience!!! This hobby absolutely requires it. I Have been doing this hobby for a little while and have conducted experiments on the light versus dark and have noticed no adverse difference to either, so to each his own. Also trying all cakes on your first grow is nice and a good idea, yet you will notice they do not always colonize at the same speed. What I did was start with 13 jars fruited 9 as cakes, 6 of which were dunked and rolled, 2 just dunked and one control, birthed straight into my fc. the other 4 were crumbled and made into a mini-bulk with rychehawk's coir mix. Just look it up. That I what I would advise for good weight and to get you started in the right direction of moving on to grains and Mono-tubs and the likes.

What were the results of your different variables??  I'm very interested to know because John is tossing all these ideas around.

He just sterilized 4 jars of substrate and is going to throw them and a colonized jar into a plastic bag and mash it around.  Should he seal the plastic bag, or fold it on the top and paper clip it shut for air flow?

i think that you wont need the water. get rid of the middle tray and make a shotgun fc out of the big one. im sure the perlite will give you plenty of humidity.

i agree with what lostkeys said.

I took a 50% colonized jar and mashed it up in a bag with 5 non-inoculated jars of PF substrate with 7 pin holes poked in the top.  It's already 30% colonized in 2 days..........wow....

My best jar is about 95% colonized now.  I'm thinking about taking another jar and colonizing another bag so I have 12 jars worth in bags and eight PF jars.

My newest question:  Can someone refer a tek to me for dealing with these bags of substrate?  It has colonized SOO fast that I'm going to do only bags from now on I think.  I saw a crushed cake tek where you crush the cake up and put it inbetween layers of vermiculite in an aluminum tupperware?  I'm willing to do ANYTHING for the highest possible yield with these bags.  I'm doing dunk and roll with the jars.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Hey, not trying to call you out or say your wrong but do you have a reference? (other than a post from a shroomery member)

It is my belief that the three big triggers for pinning are FAE temperature change and light

if you are going to "correct" something that has been published in
several cultivating books we would appreciate a reference

The number of posts does not equal knowledge....

I quote from The Mushroom Cultivator

Mushroom species requiring light for primordia formation are said to be photosensitive. although light is not necessary to induce fructification in all mushrooms (i.e. Agaricus brunnescens), certain spectra have proven to be stimulatory to pinhead initiation and are critical for the normal development of the fruitbody. Psilocybe cubensis and pleurotus ostratus are two such photosensitive species.

it goes on for two more paragraphs but I think you get the hint.

so my # of post vs someone elses is totally irrelevant I try to never post without having facts from a source more knowledgable than myself.
And all I ask is that if you are going to contradict something is to show a source.

this is from RR's notes
*Incubating dark is another thing in Paul Stamets 'The Mushroom Cultivator' that needs to go away. The old advice of "incubate in total darkness" is bunk. Those words were written by Stamets in TMC 20 years ago, and he disavows that advice today. There is no harm or benefit from keeping jars in the dark. Expose them to normal room lighting from day one. There is no reason at all to ever have your mycelia in the dark. Darkness will only delay pinning. If you give light from day one, your yields will go up, and you won't face overlay problems. I've found no benefit or harm from allowing the grain jars to be exposed to light from day one. If a few pins form in the grains, it is actually a good thing. Contrary to popular belief, a few pins in the grains can be spawned right into the manure or straw (or used in grain to grain transfers) and they do not rot or otherwise cause contamination. There is evidence they actually help to give a faster, more uniform pinset in the eventual flushes. Stamets believes it's the hormones or other chemical triggers in the pins that do this. Exposing light from day one, one jar out of a hundred will make an early pin or two, but I simply spawn those pins right into bulk substrate along with the grains with zero ill effects. (In other words, small pins don't contaminate when spawned to bulk along with the grains). Twenty years ago, Stamets wrote in TMC to "incubate in total darkness" and people stick to that as if they were the words of god. However, stamets no longer teaches incubation in darkness, and I agree. If you visit fungi perfect, you'll see 10,000 square feet of incubation area, with 8' fluorescent tubes lighting the entire area for ten to twelve hours per day. Of course myc will grow in the presents of light. IME myc grows faster in the absence of light also in nature myc colonizing substrate is most always not exposed to light so when we do not know for sure we will try to mimic nature which IMHO is the intelligent thing to do. Paul is a pioneer and is always learning as are we and things (ideas) will change again as we begin to really understand better what nature has given us. LIGHTING COLONIZATION

That enough proof for you?
