slowness
    #1053812 - 11/14/02 10:10 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

This is my first grow and things are coming along but rather slowly. The half-pint jars I innoculated took close to two months to fully colonize. And at the moment a few cakes have been in the fruiting chamber for two weeks and still no sign of pins. They grew fuzz in the first few days in the chamber but now thats dissapeared. Also a few cakes look like they have some blueing going on. I thought it might be bacteria because I read in the faqs that it slows down growth....but the cakes dont seem to be all that slimy. Did the colonization take to long to fruit? Any clue whats going on and why things are going so slow?Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Low incubation temperatures can cause slow colonization. Poor cake growth and gradual bluing can be caused by cakes drying out due to low humidity.

That's the best I can offer with the information you provided.

Two months for half pint jars to colonize probably means temperatures were low. Incubate at 80+ degrees for optimal colonization if at all possible. As for the cakes not pinning, check your humidity. If you don't have one, get yourself a humidity gague. For cake cultivation you want humidity 95% or better.

As for the incubation temperature they cakes were kept in a temp controlled environment at about 86....or at least thats what the water heater said. The fruiting chamber's humidity is kept with the vermiculite method. I have no guage and am contemplating getting one now. Thanks for the responses.
