My very first fruiting experience
    #10537464 - 06/19/09 02:49 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hi you all.

I'm new to the shroomery forums.

Ah well, let me explain my story a little bit. I had my 3 ricecakes in the fruiting chamber for like 10 days without any pinning to come out. Then i talk with someone i knew, about this. and he asked me if i did any FAE or misting the cakes. And i told him i didn't. So he advised me to do this and i followed his advice. A miracle happend the next day, the first pinhead came to be. I was very excited. I kept on fanning and misting the chamber for another whole day (about 4 times a day). So on day 12 they started to get a different colour.

I checked out alot of topics about contaminations, but i couldn't really find any good match. I was wondering if some of you have some opinion about my blueish spots.

Thanks for taking your time to read my post, hope to earn some good knowledge here.

Peace out,
Sonnyboy209

could be bruising, maybe from direct misting. I read that if you rub the area with a q-tip and the color doesn't end up on the q-tip than it is bruising. I am a newbie so get more opinions then just mine. I also think your not supposed to put the cakes in the fruiting chamber until %100 colonization because of contamination risks. good luck and happy growing.

Thanks you Shags420 for replying, what is a q-tip?

and does anyone else has an opinion about my cakes?

Q tip test has been proven to be a non-effective way of telling contaminants from bruising.

your cakes are bruised, perhaps from lack of moisture. they aren't fruiting because you haven't provided them with proper conditions.

there are supposed to be holes in the tub, etc. watch these:

Hi ABC, thanks for replying!

Ah yes, I've holes in the fruiting chamber, quiet alot. The humidity is 100% all the time, and the temperature is 24-25C.
can moisture that gets on the cakes after misting them cause contamination? or maybe i should've used the dunk&roll tactic?

cubes definitely benefit from the dunk and roll.

cakes should be misted even if you dunk and roll, but there should be no pooling water. You want them moist so they can evaporate a bit. fully colonized cakes pretty much take care of themselves, because contaminants don't have any substrate to colonize

Spraying cakes directly wont hurt

Hi guys.

The one mushroom that's growing is going really great. that one is ready soon so i can make a sporeprint out of it. but the other 2 cakes aren't growing any mushrooms yet. Well, since it's been 15 days since i had put them in the fruiting chamber, it's going really slow.
On one of these 2 cakes i'm going to use the dunk and roll and see what happends. But i was wondering, is it a good idea to give the dunk and roll a chance here. Or do you think it's already to late for that?

Greeting,
Sonnyboy209

Dunk and roll the cakes that haven't started pinning yet. They're more bruised than one of Chris Brown's girlfriends.

If you want a spore print, pick that monster after the cap opens, then do the same for that cake.

Direct misting is fine, but leaving water pooling on your cakes and pins isn't. Don't seal up your terrarium immediately after misting.

hmmm I've been following this thread and noticed you didn't bother casing just as I didn't.  I'm not quite sure how this impacts things but it would seem as though it doesn't provided you can maintain high rh and exchange air every couple of hours without lowering rh for too long (by having way too much space in your chamber, the fresh air exchange is more for getting rid of co2 buildup).

Anyways only that 1 pin and what appears to be another at the base of that thing?
that cake looks awfully barren....
My advice to you is that casing does seem to help a little bit considering my pinsets are mostly arising from borderline zones of verm and cake.  Since the top casing layer wasn't stripped, only rinsed off a bit, there's still plenty of it left and it is sitting face up in my grow, not face down as it is in yours.

I'd be interested in seeing how perhaps when you start your second flush on that cake, if you have it face up and show us how the pin-setting is working with it that way (I mean, 1 or 2 pins for a whole cake like that is... a little disappointing but good for grabbing a spore print from still).

Hi guys, thanks alot for all the help! really worked out this time. all the cakes are fruiting now, i turned 2 of the cakes upside down, or actually; the way how it was in the jar. But one of the cakes is very fluffy at the bottom of the stam, i don't think it's a contamination, but i prefere to ask the professionals on this forum .

this is the top of that body, crazy looking cap...

Yea, that's mycelium on the bottom of the stem.
