cat-scratched substrate!!!! *FINAL UPDATE* 06/28/09 *pics of harvest*
    #10525956 - 06/17/09 07:19 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

VVV *UPDATE* in reply, with pics! VVV

well at least he didn't fall IN the tub, but overnight, the wax paper inside the tub enticed him and he REMOVED the polyfil from the hole, used his paw to REACH INSIDE the tub and grab the wax paper. he failed miserably, but he did managed to scratch up my beautiful mycelium!

i was super depressed until i noticed my very first pin! it's so cute!

notice the scratches in the upper left corner.

will the myc recover and proceed as normal?? or am i totally screwed?

is there anything i can do to help the myc repair itself? should it go back into colonizing conditions? help!

also, it's worth nothing that the pin formed over night, while two holes were left open, no polyfil. is this an indication that i should be providing more FAE?? i put the polyfil back in the holes for now... it's packed in there quite loosely, and i have a fan going 24/7, which isn't a waste of power, because it's bloody hot in here without a/c! i've been misting and fanning about 3 times a day.

note: no more wax paper for me. there is nowhere i can keep my tubs that is out of reach of the cat, but still has access to light and fresh air, and he just loves that stuff. shoulda seen it coming.

oh, and do i stop misting now that i've got a pin???

thanks!!!

yeah, contams are my biggest concern. if i were to cut that part out, do i need to fill the gap with something? or just let it fruit like a cake? :frown:

yay! more pins! i count 6 in all... the cat scratches appear to be healing, but very slowly. there are no pins forming on that side of the tub. any thoughts?

thanks!

sooo another update... so far so good! i call the big one in the middle "the leaning tower of Cubensis"

pretty pathetic pinset, but for my first grow, i'm damn proud! i can't wait to watch the veils tear

the scratches, (in the bottom right corner of the first pic,) look like they've almost recovered... here's to keeping my fingers and toes crossed... and my cat out of the way!

Looks beautiful. You can get a better flush, if you case your substrate and then begin spraying and fanning immediately after casing. After this flush consider casing and begin fanning and misting.

Also, once you see any pins, reduce misting to minimal (Direct misting on pins will abort them).

Happy growing!

i've stopped misting the sub directly, and only mist the sides of the tub when it looks like it needs it.

thanks again!

i dont case shit.

ive cased a ton of projects, ive not cased a ton of projects. i cant find the want to put forth the effort to case anything any more.

im not sure if i just dont really see that BIG of a diff or im just lazy.

im guessing a combo of both.

IMO Casing helps to create a micro climate so more pins form, evenly over the entire surface. some of my best/most even flushes were from properly cased substrates.

I mist directly on all my pins and never get too many aborts. The problem really only exists if you have standing water.

final update... HARVEST TIME!!!

that was so much fun... all the time and effort is so worth it! thanks for all the help everybody, couldn't have done it without you

i was going to let these open up a bit more for making prints, but a couple of them had already started dropping spores at this point, so i figured i'd go ahead and pick em. got two decent sized prints, and two pretty small ones.

i'll be sending the two good ones to Free Spore Ring Canada.

you can still kinda see the cat scratches can't ya? lol, let's see if this tub will give me a second flush!
