Hell, you're made of chemicals. Saying you "don't do chemicals" is, um, dumb... and so is the silly trend that's emerged where "chemicals" only means the ones people don't think are healthy.
I eat chemicals for breakfast, foo

I didn't realize that the magical soil you use to grow pot is completely devoid of chemicals.
Do you kindly ask your plants to not produce any chemicals as well?

So, cubie...you grow your own. You know exactly what's in your bud.
Some of us have to buy ours, and there's no way to tell what's in there.
Probably some nasty shit.

Dude, I've been smoking like one or two American Spirits a day for the past 2 weeks or so, and I've been noticing that every morning my lungs hurt like shit, and I have a pain in my left lung if I breathe too deeply.
I had been a Camel smoker for years, but quit for the large part about a year ago. I was wondering why one or two cigarettes a day were making me feel so shitty.
I kept thinking, no fucking way, its American Spirit, its all good... but I looked, and sure enough, it says FSC. Then I realized that it claims that the tobacco is additive free, not the paper.
Fuck a duck dude. I live in Virginia. I figured we'd be one of the last to comply to this bullshit.
I'm going to write to every government person in VA I can think of.
I googled "fire safe cigarettes", and EVERY news article I found about it danced around how they make them "fire safe". They vaguely skimmed over an "extra flap of paper" that's added.
So then I did a google search for "fire safe cigarettes ethylene" and NOTHING came up!
Did a regular google search of it, and its all over the place.
What the fuck? How can they not be talking about how this is really done anywhere in the news?

I did some more digging on the FSC Spirits. (I also only smoke 1-3 Spirits a day). Someone in a forum wrote the Santa Fe tobacco Co. and asked them about their FSC process and here was the reply from the company:
Several months ago I emailed Santa Fe Tobacco Co. about the fire safe cigs. This is the reply I received from them:
Thank you for your email. If you purchase cigarettes in any of the states listed below you will receive FSC cigarettes, regardless of which brand you choose. "Fire Standards Compliant," (FSC) is a phrase Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company uses to describe the Natural American Spirit cigarettes that have been tested and have satisfied the requirements of the states of New York, Vermont, California, Oregon, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Illinois, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Utah, Alaska, Rhode Island and Washington DC. These tests, according to state authorities, measure the tendency of a cigarette to self-extinguish if left unattended. We expect that all states will eventually adopt this law.
Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company does not add any chemicals to our tobacco to comply with State fire safety laws. We simply use a new type of flax-based cigarette paper which has built-in speed bumps. Two speed bumps are placed in horizontal bands along the length of the cigarette. The burn retardant bands are virtually non-porous. As a result, not enough oxygen can diffuse through the bands to the burning tobacco in order to support the smoldering process. As the lit end burns across these bands, the supply of oxygen is restricted and the cigarette is more likely to self-extinguish. The material used to create the speed bumps is a natural starch, applied to the paper in a water solution. Our Fire Standards Compliant (FSC) cigarettes contain the same amount of tobacco that Natural American Spirit cigarettes always have, and we use only the same premium quality 100% additive-free natural tobacco our customers have come to know and expect.
So apparently the bottom line, with Spirits at least, is that they use a "natural starch" for the burn retardant bands. Hopefully the company wouldn't be shady enough to refer to a polymer as a "natural starch" via some chemistry loophole but they did sell out to Phillip Morris a few years back so who knows.
As for the EVA claim, I think this needs further validation. I've seen this claim made on several websites (including everyone's favorite source of disputed official information: Wikipedia) but I haven't seen any footnotes to back it up. Let's do some more digging, Shroomery.
Oh, and to whoever said they don't understand what the concern is, the end result is smokers get cancer...that's terrible logic. That's like saying hey, you smoke pot right, you might as well smoke cigarettes too because either way you're smoking and what's the difference.

The information is backed on wikipedia by a US patent that I'm too lazy to look up.

Google has a very good patent search system, inasmuch as it's free and it works.
