Looking for concrete tips for cultivation in Japan
    #10515220 - 06/16/09 04:40 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

I'm looking to get some advice on how to acquire all the materials for mushroom cultivation in Japan. I've done a lot of searches of the forum and found a few posts from people cultivating in Japan, but most of them are quite old, and none contain a lot of detailed information. If anyone can help guide me, please post here or send me a PM. Thank you a lot in advance!!

I found this thread from January 2009:
Success! (First time grower, BRF, cubensis - various) in JAPAN
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10184249

But it doesn't contain any concrete details, and the author hasn't logged in in quite a while...

i wouldn't imagine cultivating in japan would be any different that cultivation anywhere else in the world aside from the availability of materials (which i wouldn't think would be any harder to aquire in japan). most tek's will apply to you, you will just need to find a tek that uses materials you can find in your area. hope this helps.

Have you considered growing sclerotia forming species? I would say most of them are even simpler to grow than cubensis. Basically, all you need are spores, agar or prepared honey water (to grow mycelium), and some grain (you can even use rice). Sclerotium grows a bit longer than mushrooms, but on the other hand, you don't need a fruiting chamber because sclerotium grows in your jars. Also, ideal temperature for mycelium growth of these species, is around room temperature, so you don't even need an incubator...

What ever you decide to do, good luck

Thanks for the feedback everyone. My Japanese skills are pretty good, but the thought of tracking down all the ingredients in Japan and Japanese is rather intimidating. A quick search online yielded random comments from a lot of people, including some saying that you can't buy syringes in Japan without a medical reason, and that some of the ingredients such as vermiculate are hard to come by. Also, pressure cookers are super expensive as they are all imported. So everything becomes really expensive, as frequently happens in Japan when you have to turn to foreign sources. Not sure how feasible it is to just use a large pot and boil it instead of using a pressure cooker? Either that or I guess I can try to bring one back the next time I go overseas...

I haven't yet tried searching in Japanese for any similar forums to here. There must be some, but I'm not sure how underground it is here... Will do that soon and let you know what I find!

I didn't know about sclerotia forming species - I will do some more research there!

Thank you...

Completely feasible, if you can get verm.

You need rice, Thats pretty difficult to find in japan.

You can use wide tapered drinking glasses instead of Jars.

Vermiculite should be available in any garden center, google tells me japan is a manufacturer of the stuff so its bound to be available.

And while a syrnge is usefull if you havd a cup of sterile water with spores from a sporeprint in it you could do the same trick with your finger and a thin straw. ie, Put the straw into the water, put your finger on the end, stick into the cake and release your finger.

Tin fooil and rubber bands whouldnt he hard to get.

Okay, if I have to fend for myself, I'll just have to figure something out! Hopefully I'll have a happy story to add here later... Thanks for the encouragement...

Couple more questions.. Can I boil all my jars, etc, in a large pot instead of using a pressure cooker? Can I use plastic jars? (Glass canning jars are not available and too expensive to ship.)

use PF tek. you can just steam sterilize.

using plastic?

there is a code on the bottom of most plastic jars. PP5 is what you want. try to find the smallest food storage containers rated @ PP5 that you can. the rating is usually on the package or the bottom of the container. not sure if this applies in other countries, you can PC them as well. so boiling wont be a problem.

OR just use drinking glasses, any small container will do. but make sure you USE THE DRY VERM LAYER. try medical specimen containers if you have to. they hold up well to boiling.

i know, thats rather ironic...

good luck!
