Do I have a chance in hell?
    #1050731 - 11/13/02 09:42 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, first time grower. I've made some mistakes... ok, a lot of mistakes. Ok, a metric ton of mistakes. Some of them include:

- Birthing cakes before 100% colonized
- Cakes repeatedly falling over and knocking others down (think dominos) and falling on top of casings
- Casings being cased and then re-cased because of poor growth
- Temperatures fluctuating wildly from 60-78.

My question is, do I have a chance in hell of seeing some fruits off of these cakes/casings? Or am I up shit creek? I don't see any signs of contamination as of yet, or anything visibly wrong... but there's no way in hell I can make this many errors and still grow... is there?

It's possible, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. :frown:  At least you learned though, right?

Im kinda in the same boat as you...my first grow and i messed soo much up. I took a 50% colonized myco bag and cased it horribly with straight verm. Then it got really wet and matted so i took a pen and stirred up the casing layer. I never thought anything would happen but now its pinning beautifully! So yeah i think it can happen. Just try to keep a constant 70-75 degrees and keep as close to the other standards as you can.

no worries. WHile the shrooms themselves tend to be a bit delicate, the mycelium itself is pretty tough. If there's no contamination, then you're doing good. Just try to correct what you know is wrong and don't maake the same mistakes over. I had the domino thing too, and my cakes fell into a pool of water... and still fruited [yeah, a POOL...] so don't worry, those kind of things just slow down the process...

Next time try not to fiddle soo much.
Leave your cakes and casing to pin, you will get some fruit.

How deep is the total casing in it?

just keep trying different things, its so much easier to learn from a mistake than to read what everyone else has to say.

Thanks for the encouragement. It looks to me as though one of my casings is getting those pre-pin pins (whatever they're called) so maybe there is a chance after all. My casings are all pretty thin, 1/4 inch or so. I made the mistake of making my first one about an inch thick so I basically just scraped off a ton of excess 50/50 mix and mixed the whole casing together again.

How deep is your substrate? I would think 1/4" casing layer is too thin. 1" sounds better. I've tried to keep my casing layer at 1/3 of my substrate layer ie 3" substrate/ 1" casing and have had good results so far. I've pretty much used 1" as a minimum. Just my opinion.

sounds like he's using cakes which means he probably crumbled or sliced them first. a 2-cake tray will have a pretty thin substrate layer (mine was about 1 inch sliced cakes) so 1/3 that depth is 1/3 inch. i had the same too-thick layer on my 1 inch substrate. 1/4 to 1/2 inch on 1 inch thick sliced cakes seemed to work well.
