MERCURY Content of Shrooms???
    #1050912 - 11/14/02 12:29 AM (14 years, 29 days ago)

Hey guys. I'm wondering now... Somebody tried to tell me that shrooms have mercury in them, and that makes you crazy, obviously. Well, I seen tons of hippies and what not tripped out of there skulls, so I can believe there is permanent effects. THe persons argument was that the mercury builds up in your brain, thus creating the after effects. True? More importantly, What is the chemical content of your average shroom? Can anyone direct me to a resource on this?

Thanks, Peace

Ryan

How one would be able to create mercury out of flour, grains, birdseed, cow/horse shit, and vermiculite is fucking beyond me. they are either a chemistry genious or a fumbling idiot ( and Ill put my money on "IDIOT")

I've found no documentation (reliable or not) that mentions mercury poisoning and psilocybe mushrooms. I've found some speculation that low level mercury poisoning can interfere with the action of psliocybin, but I haven't read anything reliable and specific to back that up.

As far as the chemical content of your average shroom, it varies considerably by species. The two active drugs are psilocybin and psilocin, the oxidation of psilocin is responsible for the bluing of shrooms.

If you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask. I've got some very specific resources and articles on the chemical and pharmaceutical nature of shrooms.

Very good point! And if we were talking about cultivated cubensis, I'd agree with you. Mercury just won't come from nowhere. However, mushrooms in the wild do have a tendancy to accumulate mercury from their environment. Some mushrooms are so good at accumulating mercury that they can be toxic if eaten in high quantities. (Pleurotus ostreatus can accumulate up to 11.9 mg of mercury per kg of dry weight, however this is unusual.)

Soooooo... Assuming that cyanescens can do the same (which they can't), and assuming that toxicity of mercury for humans is 1429mg/kg... It would take around 10,000kg of cyanescens to kill you from mercury poisoning. Ha fucking ha.

So: There is no way mercury poisoning can ever be an issue with psilocybes. They can accumulate mercury in theory, but it's never *close* to enough to do any harm. Munch away.

You can check out the results of chromatography tests on psillos here:

I didn't see any mention of mercury.

Unless the mushrooms were growing on a toxic waste dump with loads of mecury, you'd probably have a better chance of getting mercury poisoning by eating too much tuna, halibut, swordfish, shark, and other large steak fishes.

The pemanent affects are not due to build up of anything in your brain, but the condition of the various receptors in your brain. Some drugs, and I am not saying cubes due this, really damage your receptors after prolonged use. This affects the ability of your brain to function like it once did. Some would argue that this isn't necessarily a bad thing, others wuld laugh at this argument. Anyway........ mercury in the brain, huh. Damn your friend is probably a christian sheep also and believes that taking drugs is Satan whispering in your ear. Tell your friend he is full of crap and he should read more.

This is true. The issue of mercury is an issue of contamination. It is an environmental issue, not an intrinsic mushroom issue.

I thought it was alot less than that, like 1.5mg/kg. you got the math wrong. 1429mg is over a gram per kilogram! maybe you meant micrograms? I heard one woman accidentally spilled a drop on her skin so she washed it off but still died a few months later. probably a few miligrams got absorbed and thats all it took!

I think he's talking single lethal dose. Mrec is harmful in much lower doses.

Hmmm. Thank you, everyone, for so many timely replies. i must admit, I will be warry of just going down to the cow pasture, and picking and eating. So the fact of the matter is that there is some validity to MY MOM'S argument. [yeah, that's right, MY MOM, so watch out] Anyone one else got info? I would love to see a test with refernce to mercury. I wish i could test one of these suckers. Some of guys are really on top of it. Surprised you knew i was talking about cyanscens... Must be paying attention :-)
\
BTW I'm talking specifically about hawaii. God knows WTF is in the soil [did anyone hear about how the gov tested bio agents on unknowing civilians by airial spraying, back in the 50's?] Besides there is all the stuff that has been deposssited by the volcano, whether by lava or through the air. Apparently, however, there are a lot of peopleaffected by mercury there, thus making me more warry still...

thanks everyone

Assuming contaminated ground, I'd be much more wary of eating the cows then a few shrooms that may be growing there.

a lethal dosage of mercury is a few miligrams total, not 1429mg/kg as he stated!

No. This statement is wrong. I rechecked my sources, and I stand by them. LD50 toxicity for oral administration of mercury in humans is 1429mg/kg. I agree, this number sounds high, but that is for a very important reason: It is very hard to absorb mercury from the intestional tract. Only about 0.01% of the amount of mercury ingested through the intestional tract is absorbed by the body.

Toxicity for methyl mercury and mercury vapour is much higher. Do you smoke your shrooms? I sure don't.

I hope this ends this topic, there is too much misinformation already.
