Casing Flush Question
    #1042280 -

Question-

My first flush I recieved near 140 grams wet. The second flush however I only recieved around 20 grams wet. Why the sudden drop off? The humidity, temp, ect. has been the same as before. My setup is as follows;

EQ STRAIN
2 CAKES from 1/2 pint jars for the CASING itself
CAKES are made from BRF and vermiculate
Casing is straight vermiculate

I don't know if this matters or anything but after the 1st flush, the second flush or what I believe to be the second flush began within 1 day, there was no lag time.

I'm no pro - but perhaps your second flush isnt the second flush, but a continuation of the first?? Continually flushing? I'm not sure (i guess i shouldnt have posted)

Do you understand what B/E is (biological efficancy ratio)?

You have 1 pint of substrate. Only a part of which is nutrient.

If you have 1 pound of nutrient & you get 1 pound of shrooms. That is 100% B/E.

With a good substrate, you can get 250% B/E(with some skill).

With a small partial nutrient substrate. You get a small return.

Simple as that.

So to figure out B/E you have to go by the weight of actual nutriants not the total weight of the substrate

IMHO, Verm don't count. It only holds moisture & no nutes. In a commerciial substrate (all pretty much nutes), the total weight counts.6T

Sometimes that happens to me. I guess those 2 grams are some kind of pre 2nd flush mushrooms. I'm stating this because for me usually 2nd flush is equal or bigger than the 1st (in terms of dry weight).
I use rye and never used PF style substrate thought. Maybe in this type of substrate the nutrients get used up faster?

I say wait 4 or 5 days for the real 2nd flush.

I've noticed smaller flushes after the initial too, however the fruits tend to be larger.  They also don't look like they start out as pins, but instead push up throught the casing.  My friend uses 50/50+ casing mix w/ rye or sometimes wheat berry substrate.  We're not really sure what the deal is.  I've never mentioned soaking them in water.... what's that called, I forget.  I do give 'em a good soaking w/the spay bottle after harvest though.
