Jar lid with silicon injection port and polyfil filter (Tek) - pictorial

Jar lid with silicon injection port and polyfil filter (Tek)

This is how I make my jar lids. There are many more complicated designs using several filter layers and other improvements but I find this design optimal for my needs. I have lids that are 3 grows old and haven't failed me yet even once, although once I got the filter wet. The only problem is shaking the jars, but with a bit of care it is possible and there are no problems.

The material you will need:
Jar lids
2 ml Syringe
Polyfil
Silicon
- Pro growers like RR say normal silicon glue works and withstands PC, but I am not willing to risk and on a small scale it doesn't cost that much more to use heat resistant silicon.
Something to cut syringes with
A glove to apply silicon glue
A drill
2 drill bits
- One bigger for the filter port and smaller for the injection port

Step 1
Take a lid and drill a small hole in the center to use as an injection port. Try to make the hole, by applying moderate pressure and drill at high speed so that the hole is really good, without any protruding metal.

Step 2
Make the bigger hole, which will serve as a filter. The drill you use should be just a bit smaller than the syringe.

Step 3
Take a syringe and cut it. You want it to stick in the an inch (2-3 cm) or even a bit more over the level you grain is going to be.

Step 4
Stick the cut syringe in the bigger hole. If the size is tight it shouldn't be easy sticking it inside.

Step 5
Put a glove on you hand and apply silicon. First fill the small hole well. You want enough silicon so that when you stick a needle it holds its integrity.

Step 6
After that apply silicon around the base of the syringe. Use you finger (you wear gloves) to press it so that it is flat and fills all holes.

Step 7
Leave the jars for 24 hours so that the silicon hardens.

Step 8
After the time is up take some polyfil betwen your fingers and form a piece of it looking like a bullet. Than stick it isnide the syringe, press it hard and it will form the perfect filter for our mycology needs.

This is it. Between grows you can easily take the filter out and soak it in bleach water, but I have never found it necessary. Any advice/recommendation is welcome.

I like to do jars like that too, except i just put micropore over the top and bottom of the gass echange for pf jars works great without a dry verm layer.

The syringe part for the polyfill is nice. Shouldnt need to bleach it though since you are pressure cooking it anyway.,

Nice post

Pressure Cooking without aluminum foil [Re: Estario]

Here is a little idea that came to my mind while preparing a batch of jars for PC. You can plug the piston of the syringe and use it to prevent water from dripping inside the jars. There would be no problem with pressure since it is the same of both sides of the filter.

And 15psi isn't going to push the piston of the syringe into the jar?

Not with the filter in place.

Can you push a syringe piston through an 18 gauge needle? I know he's not using the needle but he hasn't cut off the threaded nipple.

whats the point of the filter?!
Can these jars be used for liquid culture and normal cake method jars that are filled with substrate?

The point of the filter is to allow Gas Exchange and the filter helps keep contaminates out.
I'm pretty sure you could use these for LC, but I don't think brf cakes won't work.
