First off, we don't know if that's Osama, it's an audio tape.
Perhaps an expression that makes more sense if you're living in the middle east?
Pharoahs(sp?) were, of course, the leaders of ancient Egypt, and were believed to be actual gods.
If a westerner had written that, they probably would have used the word "dictator" or something.

The use of the word pharaoh is a heavily freighted [weighted?] term drawn from Quranic texts, where the lesson of the fall of the pharaoh is deemed an example of the fate of arrogant leaders who think their own power equals God's. -- source.
The speaker (presumably Bin Laden) goes on to describe,"Both Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, in their roles as leaders of the Gulf War, visited more destruction on Baghdad than Halagu, the 13th century Mongol and grandson of Ghengis Khan who sacked what was then a center of Islamic civilization....
I presume that the pharaohs in the Qur'an are portrayed as the embodiment of hubris. This would explain why Bin Laden addresses his letter, "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. From the slave of God, Osama Bin Laden, to the peoples of the countries allied with the tyrannical US Government--to contrast his relative 'selflesness.'
I don't have a Qur'an sitting around, so I can't relay the specific quotes Bin Laden may be using as a reference. Its possible that this is a common and well-understood idiom in the "Muslim world," as well. I'm not sure.

This is from the Globe and Mail today:
"In the language of the Koran, "pharaoh" is a phrase often used to refer to all infidel rulers, not just of Egypt. It has been adopten by radical Islamists to describe non-Islamic rulers of Muslim nations, and as a term of derision for Western leaders.
When Khaled al-Istambuli assassinated Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat in 1981, the 24-year-old military leader shouted to the crowd: 'I am Khaled al-Istambuli. I have killed Pharaoh, and I do not fear death.'
In his message to the United Nations yesterday, Mr. Hussein opened with a Koranic quotation: 'Go thou to Pharaoh, for he has indeed transgressed all bounds. But speak to him mildly; perchance he may take warning or fear.' Mr. Hussein's use of the term was almost certainly not an echo of Mr. Bin Laden's."
So there you go.
When do they refer to Horus? Muslims wouldn't have any use for egyptian gods.

I believe that Bin Laden is still alive... I think that he was out of the country days before we started bombing, brough out by supporters and being hidden by either Saudi Arabias Royal Family or Pakistans Secret Government....
Anyone who thinks that we have any controoll in the middle east is crazy... They all hate us more than they hate eachother and will prove it some day..

The latest is that the recording definately sounds like a sickly bin Laden, but they also mentioned that voice recognition is not an exact science, and it would be fairly easy to fake.
