i'm just learning how to make a clone on agar...
what's best out of? :
- Single-Compartment Petri Dishes
Two-Compartment Petri Dishes Three-Compartment Petri Dishes Four-Compartment Petri Dishes
is it riskier to use multi compartments.. -> due to the lid being opened more often?
cheers b

Personally I like the O (one section) dishes for isolation particularly of sources like spores where you may have a large amount of genetic variation and will need not just one but also subsequent flowing isolations to reach a perfect isolate. In more isolated cases where not as much room is required, Y (three section) dishes are far better for low diversity isolation and can be used more easily for tissue transfers.
This is just my experience. I use a glovebox with good sterile procedure and have had contaminants in roughly 4% of my dishes only 1% of my dishes have ever had a working project in them while receiving a contaminant. So I would not worry so much about the amount of time open until you are actually working on the project.
I've heard complaints about the X (4 section) dishes being too constrained, but nothing about the I (2 section). I think I chose well to go with Os and Ys in the selection of my dishes and would recommend such a choice to anyone considdering the purchase of dishes. I may warn you that in order to get a good deal on dishes you often need to purchase around 300. In order to get the split of O and Y I had to go in with an associate here and got them at a cost of ~$.30 per dish.
As for agar, you'll need to find agar agar powder, many health foods stores stock this sort of thing I find. You may need to look arround a little more for a nearby seller.
The simplest additives are potato and dextrose (PDA), or malt extract(MEA). You can find a few of these recipes on the main page of the shroomery under the agar section.
