Is this some sort of witty commentary on biased polls, or am I giving you too much credit here?

If you are an Atlantis believer, I would tend to agree.

Are you aware that despite some 500+ books on Atlantis, there is only one brief 'historical' reference that itself is a handed down story?

There were cases of entire cities sinking below the sea due to tidal waves, earthquakes or similar natural disasters, but I highly doubt the 'classical' Atlantis as is portrayed in the media and literature has ever existed.

The benefit of the doubt.  I'm operating under the generous assumption that you aren't so arrogant and dogmatic as to actually believe that anyone who even considers the possibility of a historical Atlantis is a "nutjob," and that anyone who dismisses it out of hand is somehow "rational."

'Considering' is far different than believing. There is more historical 'evidence' for dragons than there is for Atlantis.

The persistence of flood myths throughout the world is likely an artifact of the rise in sea levels that occurred at the end of the last ice age.  I do not think it at all unreasonable to posit that the civilization to which Plato referred might have been an ice age culture, advanced for its time, whose civilization perished with this rise in sea level.

A coastal city being submerged is quite believable, but bares little in common with the modern day portrayal of the technologically advanced mythical continent peopled by busty blondes in white flowing robes or is that the Playboy Mansion?

That stuff was all added much later, and to say that one believes Atlantis existed does not necessarily imply such "fluffy" New Age beliefs about it.

I would guess that The Atlanteans were Atlantic coast dwellers in what is now modern Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. Sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar would have been a much more effective means of expanding and conquering the known world than footing it across desert and through Europe.

Then maybe there was a tsunami, and those rich coastal states lost their valuable citys. The trips down the straight would have dropped off, while Mediterranean states continued to thrive and progress. "Island" hasn't been a word for that long, and it's likely that Plato's island is a translation of "water land". The Atlantic coast is in fact a water land.

At the time Plato's account takes place, sea levels were still low, but not at the Ice Age minimum. Even at the Atlantic minimum, there is not enough surface area to constitute a claim of any "island" the size of Libya and Asia Minor in the Atlantic Ocean. It would take a drop in sea level of 3000 meters in order to produce an Island that large, and most of the land mass would only begin to surface once the drop passed 2000 meters.

There is the idea that perhaps Atlantis was in the Mediterranean, yet this directly contradicts Plato's account, which specifically states that Atlantis was not in fact, in the Mediterranean.

Further, Atlantis is related in a story involving Socrates, a man who we cannot historically verify even existed. Going on the assumption that Socrates did exist, it still falls flat when you consider that for all the time in between, Plato was the only one who really knew much about Socrates?
