When is the best time to plant cacti?

there are a wide variety of cacti I have become interested in growing, but I've never grown cacti before, and have no idea when would be a good time to plant them. I'm guessing the extreme hot period of the summer is probably not the best time. thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

Planting cuttings or starting seed?
Take cuttings in Winter, plant in Summer.
Seeds, I start at the beginning of the year.

I was thinking seeds...thanks! I'll probably be able to afford them by then

I was thinking about some Ariocarpus and Mammillaria species, as well as some trichs

You can still start them, just get a cheap flouro from walmart, they sell a 75watt for 10 dollars. Start indoors and you can grow anytime.

Yea, walmart sells some CFL's that put out like 2000 lumens, great for seed starts. Im doing ariocarpus myself right now, they plump quickly! Ariocarpus Agavoides to be exact and im grafting most to pereskiopsis, are you familiar with pereskiopsis? If not do a search for pereskiopsis grafts (author: Una). I love pereskiopsis for seedlings, its insane doing in 2-3 years what nature naturally needs 10 for. :heart:. I do germination indoors year round under CFL's, so long as your house is climate controlled it will work fine. Be sure to order from a reputable seed vendor, otherwise the seed will be locked into a hard dormancy and/or unviable outright. Good luck.

Starting in spring is best, for cactus seeds.
I'd recommend you to grow from cuttings though.

I wouldn't reccomend taking cuttings in the winter when the cactus is dormant.

i usually cut towards the end of the growing season and keep them indoors in a warm and sunny place over winter, by spring they are usually well rooted and ready to go.
