Pasteurization of poo doesn't seem needed
    #1048851 - 11/13/02 11:11 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Just wanted to let everyone know, that my cat spawned a small (about 3.5 inches deep, 7 in. long, and 4 in. wide) tray of poo, and altho it took awhile for the cake to recover from the shock of being crumbled, its starting to grow quite fast and very rhizo. The poo was old (nice earthy smell) and had been rained on recently, so the moisture level is prolly a bit too high, but its a growin. The only thing my cat did to prepare the cow shit is crumble it into small pieces, amazing considering she has no thumbs. Still, its too early to tell if there will be any contams, buts its going very nicely so far and my cat is very happy. Its incubating somewhere at 80-86 degrees. I'll be sure to post here if my cat tells me it contammed or not.

What do people pasteurize their poo for anyways? I know the cowshit they grow on in the great outdoors sure isn't pasteurized....does it just reduce the risk of contams or does it do somethin else?

Rhizo: Prolly 3 parts spawn, 6 parts poo.

My cat spawned with whatever substrate is in those (somewhat unreliable, got contammed, which is why my cat is doing this mini-casing thing, just a last ditch effort to save it, so if it doesn't work, no big deal) myco bags from Spore Works. It looks like some kinda bird seed, but I don't know for certain.

how long since you spawned? my guess is, if it doesnt contam from not pasteurizing, it will contam from bieng too wet. good luck though.

About 71 hours.  Yeah, I agree with the contam thing, so I'm not getting my hopes up too high.   But I'll definately post whether my cat was successful or not!

One, repeat this experiment 75-5000 times and see how many times you get contamination. Then do it the same number of times but pasteurize the dung. Consistency is a very important factor to consider, not just hey, look what I got away with one time.
Two, your spawn rate is the only thing thats allowing this to happen. 3:6 = 1:2. Most people are gonna be doing more like 1:10 or even 1:25 if they are going to bother with a bulk substrate. I mean the biggest reason to use bulk substrates is so you don't have to prepare 55 gallons of grain spawn, 55 gallons of bulk sub being much easier to prepare. In your case, you could have simply made the entire casing out of grain without expending much effort.

Anyway, yeah, the spawn rate is why you are getting away without pasteurizing.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Mycofile is on the money -- here. Not pasturizing is about like not wiping your ass. You might not get a brown spot in your shorts once. But, over the long haul, you will more often, than not. 6T

Even if you don't get contams, I'll bet you'll have those little poo flies, damn they're a bitch. Pasteurization will rid your poo of these flies. Thats one more reason

Those flies will come anyway, regardless of wether you pasteurise or not.
I pastuerise everything but inevitably one day I`ll open my terrarium and poof flies.
