Honey water spore syringes
    #1036478 - 11/08/02 01:46 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I don' t know if anyone has tried this before or not.. but would it be a good idea to use honey water instead of just water when making spore syringes? You would let the spores start germinating inside the syringe, before using it to inoculate your jars. This trick SHOULD speed up colonization of the jars. What do you guys thing? Good idea or too much hassle?

depends on how much it's colonized, wouldn't it be hard to squeeze it out of the syringe?

It will work but if you wait too long, the  mycelium could have problems passing trough the needle, it is better if jou make a jar with honey-water, you will be able to chop the mycelium at any time...

Make a common spore syringe an use 1cc of it to inoculate a whole honey-water jar....
It seems much better to me

do you just shake it up when its in the jar to break it up and suck it through your syringe when you want to innoculate something? this makes me wonder why not use hoeny water in a BRF mix, and do you know what temperature to keep these at? is 70's alright? i read the tek for it but it didnt say what temperature just a "warm dark place".

I tried using honey water instead of water in a syringe once.

The problem I found was that the honey water kept caromalising (spelling?), due to the small amounts used.

I could pressure cook it for a shorter time, but thats a contamination risk.

you have a good idea, but a tek dtill needs to be developed so that all the bugs and kinks can be worked out. I'm gonna try it

I use honey in my substrate mix, and it seems to work well. So if you want to ad honey to the mix it seems to me it is easier to do so in the substrate mix.

Why not just whip out a honey water jar?

If carmelization is a problem? Use a light dry malt, instead of honey. Honey has some wax (or something in it) that seems to cause sediment -- when I tried it. I resolved that by heating it, then straining it through a coffee filter, then PC'ing.

Thick myc in a jar is a pita to suck out with a syringe & can plug a needle. Place some thick glass shards in the jar. So, when you agitate it. It will chop up the myc, a bit. 6T

I agree with 6T on this one.
You have more liquid inoculant as well as having a jar of healthy mycelium.
Just keep agitating it and it will grow till the honey us depleted.
Then you can wap it in the fridge for longer than 6 months I`ve found.

That jar is freaky looking. Is the green the extra glass?
What's the deal with the jar lid?? Intrigueing.
Smaller, individual 'portions' of mycelia in syringes should give you a bit of an edge with contamination. They don't sit around as long.
I was thinking that a glass marble or a small piece of stainless steel rod, or maybe a kid's jack could be used stir the mix.

Yup, it has some thick blue green plate glass shards in the bottom .... that sort of tint the pic -- weird.

(edit) The lid has an external air filter on it & a injection -- withdrawal port. 6T

anybody started any and got any progress? my jar is looking like there are strands like when you spit in a drink and its all milky strandy looking. lol its stserlized and it was clear when i made it! how much honey did you put in that jar SixTango? this method seems like it would be the easiest method for culturing mycelium for innoculation... does this really speed up colonization times?

That jar did not contain any honey. It had about 1/4 teaspoon of light dry malt & 1/8th teaspoon of dextrose in it. 6T

Can one just use a little brf instead of honey/dextrose/agar?
