is there a way you can preserve mushrooms in that they look exactly the same as you picked them? and have them just for decoration?
is this possible

I did a google search on "preserve fresh flowers" and there are numerous results. What works for flowers should work for mushrooms as well. The problem in preserving the shrooms is that they are 90 % water. Try reading about wax preservation. I have never done something like that, but it sounds interesting so please keep us updated.

I know that you can suspend them in honey for quite a while.  You just have to pour of the water that collects on top.

i would try dehydrating them as fast as possible, or maybe even get some dry ice and try to crudely freeze dry them. then maybe dip them in polyurethane or shellac or something of that nature.

Plastination maintains them almost exactly what they looked like for decades (with some minor initial loss of colour on the outside being possible).

Not sure how to DIY that though, acetone bath and vacuum chamber are easy enough to ghetto-rig, but I'm not sure where you could get suited silicone ...
