erikm said: Alright, I think I've decided on my set up. Im going to put an air pump inside of the tank, along with a mist/fog machine. A few questions
-What size air pump will I need? -If I have an air pump, how many holes will I need in the tank, and how big? -Anyone have any ideas on how to construct a cheap mister/fogger? If not can someone direct me to where I can buy one?
Thanks for the help guys
If you are working with 5+ inches of perlite you should not need the fogger. I like the air pump set up, and if you go spend about $20 you should have a big enough air pump. Make sure to hook it up to bubble wands to spread out the air flow. No holes are necessary as the air will find a way out so long as you don't seal your fc. If you come home and your cakes are green, then you needed a bigger air pump. Make sure that you have a couple of inches of water in the tub when you leave.

if you have a shotgun terraim you dont even need an air pump. it will do fine on its own for a week.
Its pretty much as automated as you can get without adding mechanical means.
someone asked about this about a month ago and came up with a similar setup with fogger and fan, to end up just using a shotgun, came back a week later to fruits

I likes the air pumps, I know that they work and work well, all the post in the world will not convince me otherwise.

You have never tried an air pump... Although I have never tried the shotgun, I can see and understand how it works. You notice that I do not recommend against them. How can you recommend against an air pump when you know nothing about it and obviously have a hard time understanding how well they can work. I find no logic in your reasoning. BTW, shotgun + air pump + auto mister, could and would most likely be a bad ass automated set up.

I tried the shotgun and gave it a good run. I very quickly quit using it because I didn't like all that hassle.

Probably could use a little more perlite, but ya get the point.

Using the shotgun in this manor was a pain in the ass for me because I had to remove ALL my trays every time I wanted to mist the perlite. That's just ONE of the reasons why I stopped using the Shotgun.
PROS: A semi-transparent tote can cost approx $20.00(give or take a few bucks). A 4 teir mini greenhouse costs $15.99 + $12.00 shipping. It holds 4 times more than a Shotgun. Less maintenance than a shotgun. Fully automated if set up correctly. Easier accessible. Better light transmission Takes up the same space as a tote (footprint dimensions) Requires NO perlite (which can cost approx $37.00 incl shipping unless you can find it locally).
CONS: Automation is NOT free. Timers are not free. Foggers are not free. Not really a con, but you should still mist your shit. Condensation and/or misting your walls will eventually dribble down to the floor. Keep the floor covered in that location.
Once again the diagram was NOT a detailed specification. If I had the time I might have included safety warnings, drew it to scale, had the diagram UL approved, insured for liability, have everyone sign a waiver before viewing it, etc... Sorry, but it might have been more helpful if I didn't post it at all?
I think a shotgun terrarium will do great especially for a beginner! I was just not dedicated to it. Some very experienced guys & gals use shotguns for YEARS. It’s well proven and well documented that it works. I’m not bashing the shotgun … it just wasn’t ideal for me.
I’ve done 3 grows inside my greenhouse and it’s workin great so far.
