Indiana Man faces 20-50 years for growing mushroom

This was in my hometown newspaper. I typed up the story so everyone could see it. In Indiana he's facing a minimum of 20 years and a maximum of 50 years for mushrooms. Anyway, here's the story:
Anderson man accused of growing illegal mushrooms in homemade laboratory
Herald Bulletin, Anderson, Indiana 10-18-02 Page A5
By Ron Browning ? Staff Reporter
An Anderson man is accused of creating a homemade laboratory to grow illegal psychedelic mushrooms. Michael Lee Stewart, 25, 526 W. Ninth St., Apt. 2, was formally charged Thursday with Class A felony dealing a schedule 1 controlled substance and Class D felony maintaining a common nuisance. Next to murder, a Class A felony is the most serious crime under Indiana Law ? punishable by up to 50 years in prison. Police were called to Stewart?s apartment about 12:10 pm Saturday to investigate a domestic disturbance. While they were there, Stewart?s girlfriend told officers Stewart had a ?mushroom lab? in his bedroom closet, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in the case. Stewart showed investigators the operation, which was fashioned out of a cooler and light bulbs, and said the drugs were for his personal use, according to the affidavit. He told officers he looked up information on how to grow the nushrooms on the Internet because he ?couldn?t find them anywhere around Anderson,? the document states. Police said the amount of drugs found indicated Stewart likely was selling them rather than simply using them for himself. Stewart appeared Thursday before Madison County Magistrate Stephen Clase by video camera from the Madison County Detention Center. Clase set Stewart?s bond at $35,000 and entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

If all he had was a few casings, this is BS. If he was growing in bulk...serves him right.

I have no idea...but, I'm guessing it wasn't a giant cooler, so he couldn't have had too many. It sounds damn harsh to me, even if it was in bulk...I mean, damn...20 years? I think 5 would be plenty.

That is messed up man. Irregardless of what method he was growing he should be left alone! Further proof why to not trust ANYONE, even your significant others. Trust is the first step to betrayal

Phooey on you!!! No one deserves to go to jail for shrooms or weed, ever for any reason! And if he was growing them for his friends he's just a nice guy with a b!tch girlfriend.

There is nothing wrong with growing in bulk. It seems like your trying to say that there is something wrong with it not because of the act of doing it but because you feel that selling mushrooms is wrong. Sure we all hate the blackmarket, but to say that giving a man 20 years prison time for growing mushrooms is the right service, then I really hope that you will open your mind a little and try an understand what your saying exactly. I mean a man can rape a woman and not get 20 years prison time. DO you see anything wrong with that picture?
Women super irrational creatures that will get pissed off at you no matter how well you treat them. You think that you can be nice to them and love them and they will respond in the same way to you, but they will not.
Never let a cop in your home.

No man, I'm saying he didn't do anything wrong and deserves to live free. I was eplying to the earlier nudnik that said he deserved to go down for bulk cult. Growing lots is a public service as far as I'm concerned.

Growing for yourself is ok. Growing for a few of your friends is ok. Growing in bulk and trying to make a profit off these things is horrible.
I don't know if some of you realize this, but sites like the Shroomery are at the razor's edge of the law. All it takes are a few incidents like this to provoke legal action by the Feds, and after that, you can bet your ass that every single shroom-related store, site and message board will be shut down. Anyone keep tabs on the recent move to schedule Salvia? All it really took were a few choice claims by idiotic online-dealers likening the stuff to LSD, and now the stuff looks to be illegal within the month. Any shred of irresponsibility by the shroom crowd, and it's all over. Get ready for oven-dried black market shrooms.
20 years is a lot though. The guy should get 5 for being an idiot.

I'm sure that a lot of the shrooms I've taken have come from bulk growing operations. I thank the growers.
