"Water Crystals"
    #1047189 - 11/12/02 07:06 PM (14 years, 28 days ago)

In reading Stamets GGMM he tells us about a casing recipie that intrigued me. I am wondering if anyone has tried this and how much success they have had. Here is the recipie:

1 part verm
1 part "water crystals"

they are mixed up dry and saturated with water.

If anyone is wondering what "water crystals" are you can buy them at most garden stores.

They are about the size of granulated salt and when you add water to them they expand to about 200 times their original size. When saturated with water what was a coarse salt like material becomes a silmy gel. I am unsure of what it's made of but I think it is some sort of plastic. The water retention is simply amazing. I am also unsure if the reaction with the water is chemical or physical. Are the crystals porous or not?

I cant find any reason why this material coupled with vermiculite would not be the idea casing layer.

Again, I am curious if anyone has had any experience with this?

BTW, the above information pertains to the cultivation of shitake mushrooms and none other. I only use the shroomery forums as an information source for fungi propogation, not the cultivation of psylocibes.

i tried water crystals about 2 years ago when someone first talked about it on the boards. unfortunately i was going through some hardtimes back then with housing so i neglected my mushroom cultivation. I did in fact though just cased straight with water crystals (b+ and amazonian) and did manage to get some mushrooms. Unfortunately, I was hit with contaminations though after a week. I'm not entirely too sure why i was hit with contams, it could be that the casing layer wasn't clean or cause i wasn't fanning my terrerium enough times or even my exboyfriend might have done something to fuck up my cultivation who knows...

but yes, you can try the water crystal tek, it somewhat worked for me.

see

www.watercrystals.com

explains most things about them. looks interesting. could be a problem of aeration alowing the mycelium to breath, but if you get the amount of vermiculite right it could be great. i think i'll give it a try on the next run.

A question to be asked would be to inquire whether the crystals affinitity for water is greater than the mycelial networks counter-affinity?

I'd imagine Stamets would have answered that in his studies though.

Polyacrylamide crystals are polymers of acrylamide. The are toxic in their monomer form. Deep fried foods sometimes have acrylamides in them. Watch out for those french fries, they have multiple modes of pathogenicity.

Suntzu has experience with these.
