same thing just happened to me, i had 10 containers and i wanted to experiment a little so i put some with a thick casing layer and some thin, the results were: the ones with the thin layers grew lots of myc on the surface but did not produce nearly as many fruits as the ones that had the thick casing layers. the ones with the thick casing layers did not show much growth on top but popped so many mushrooms up it looked like they were fighting each other for air!! good luck!

There is little to no benefit from casing cow manure, which fruits very well uncased.  If the colonization slowed down, there's a reason. What does it smell like, and are you misting every day to keep the surface nice and moist?
