FREE Glove Box

Here are the neighborhood armadillo's plans for a glove box using the box the jars came in-and the piece of cardboard that held the lids in the 'base' or bottom of the 'clean area'. Cover with a large clear trash bag or dry cleaning bag. You can cut the bag shorter, and put your hand thru the open end, or you can tape the open end of the bag closed and tape it to the table, abd cut slits in the side of the bag for access.

Definitely!
The box, standing up on end, with the flaps taped up. Put it in to the end of the bag. Insert the cardborad lid piece into the box for a little work surface The box gives shape to the bag. It's not huge, but the 'dillo says he can do syringes and pint jars no problem. He says the bag gives you a little more working room then covering the box with saran wrap does.

i suppose you could do that. If you were motivated, you could make one from leggos. Better get the lysol out. You'll probably have similar results if you use the free invisible one that you can't see or touch because it's not there.

Now that I actually think about it.. this "glove box" kinda makes me laugh. Why even bother, this would be the same as using any draft free area. You might as well just be working under your bed. Or here is an idea. Wrap yourself in foil run some electricity through it and start attracting some particles. If that doesn't work you could always tape a piece of cardboard to the top of your head so that it will block falling particles from hit your tools. To make this all work your probably gonna want to put one of those 'sharper image' particle collector/cleaner right next to you and spray the area with a full can of lysol.
I wonder if you could really make a glove box using magnetism.

I always liked this idea, it is NOT MINE, it was told to me by ignuF. His idea entierly.
"It is simple to make. It is a 10 gal. fish tank sitting on its side. I have 3 pieces of plastic overlapping the opening and they overlap each other by approximatly 3 in. The main thing with the slits is to keep the opening covered when you put your hand in them so keep plenty of slack in the plastic for this. Spray the inside down with alcohol (I prefer the 91% isopropyl) and wipe dry with paper towl. You could use a rubbermaid instead of the fish tank but I prefer the glass to see what I am doing clearly."
I use it now to make prints. Much cleaner than anywhere else but the lab.

I was reading a thead not too long ago and it was explained that 70% iso is better than 91%. I forgot the reason, but I remember that part.

This one starts with a $7 rubbermade from Wally-world. Add dishwashing gloves, and a HEPA filter/fan if you want.
This one is a bit more.

I don't know what the thread was titled, but I'm sure if you really want to find it, you can. Just type in 91% isopropyl and see what comes up.

Dood whatever works for you keep doing it. Eventually you'll find better methods and rid yourself of the old less practical ones. Everyone does things differently, me for example, for non g2g inoculation pf tek style jars I've found it works best when I just sit at my dining room table popping lids off and jamming a boiled but not alcohol-wiped syringe in there. Usually 1 or 2 contam'd out of 100. I found that with that particular method, it doesn't work so well with grain inoculation or g2g, those are best left to the oven door. Now, just because my dining room is a contaminant free zone for pf tek style jars doesn't mean that I'll assume everyone's dining room is nor would I be so bold as to recommend something as such on this forum. It works for me, and I use it, but I wouldn't expect other people to. If this is what works for you more power to ya, but it's hardly worth mentioning here.
But since I don't believe in posting pure opinion without trying to contribute something to the poster or the readers: Perhaps your tek might be easier if you just used the clear plastic bag and forget about the box. Load up all your jars into the bag with tight lids, spray it down good, then begin your work. Better yet, you could get an autoclavable bulk sized bag, put all your jars in there and fold the end over like you would a myco bag, load the whole thing into the pc, sterilize them, open up the pc, tie the bag shut, pull it out, let it cool, and then just work in the bag... This seems like it would be easier than the whole box thing. Just a thought.

Damn! I'm a little leary of used equipment-it prolly came from a secret .gov germ lab or somethin'
The Ghetto Box is 1. Free; 2. Assembled in 90 seconds.
I thoght it might help some of the folks that can't get past the PFcake stage. If it doesn't apply to you, no worries.

Coincidently, the armadillo upgraded to the Sterilite/Rubbermiad version. He was hoping to see some pics if you get them. He scored some cheap agar from an oriental food store. Just a buck for 2 ounces of Telephone brand agar. No big bags of brown rice though. They also had a small bag of gypsum for 50 cents. Go figure.

Man why not just use the oven tek and FUCK the glovebox? Gloveboxes are complicated and confined. Use the oven tek and set a thick 1 inch board on the rack so its not so hot. If not spend some cash and get a flowhood
