My cakes are shrinking!?!
    #4412247 - 07/16/05 04:17 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

About a month ago I inoculated 8 PF jars with Golden Teacher. They finally started showing signs of myc. growth about 2 weeks ago. Five of these cakes are almost fully (95%) colonized, but I noticed something strange about them. They seem to be shrinking in certain spots along the side. There is myc. growth along the side of the cakes but they seem to have pulled away from the side of the jar. Is this normal? They don't seem to be drying out, there is plenty of water droplets where the cake has receded, so it seems to be very moist.

as i look at my Cambodia's i noticed the same thing, its as if it is a bubble of air receding were the colony is strong. i believe this is fine. the myc is using the cake a food and its literally sucking energy from it resulting in the cake shrinking. i think your good

The same thing happened to me. Its nothing to be concerned about. Its just the fungi doing what it does, decaying and eating nutrients. Just wait till they are done colonizing and proceed with what ever plans you had with them.

yup, the mycelium is metobolising the food, eating it. Thats why the substrate shrinks.

Compare the size of a spent cake to a freshly birthed cake. You will see a huge difference in size.
