Of course its true.  It was condescending, not sarcastic.

You simply stated the obvious cause of much mental illness and in doing so betrayed your own attempt to say there is no such thing as bi-polar.

Environment plays a roll, some people do break up. It isn't an illness if you can function though. Like I said, I have major depressive bouts, and you know what I have learned to do? Rest a bit, then pull myself up by my sorry boot straps. Life can suck. Children and people aren't gonna just go crazy because mommy fed them too much candy. They may be off, but noone is normal anymore.

OP, am i to reason that my mother, who is bi-polar, is really just faking it or perhaps just not in tune with her soul? The attempted suicides, the crying, the years of pain? She went off her meds and it got a little better, but then became much worse.

i think these disorders like schizo, bi, and such are real, but not "disorders" so to speak, more just the mind having a different way of interpreting things

who the fuck is to say these different perceptions are "wrong"

Basically.

I agree that it is overdiagnosed quite often, but I have known/know some VERY bipolar people who get way worse when off their meds.

Tea, you're just being an absolutist douche here.

I think you are trying to be too controversial for you own good.

And "Fuck society," what does that even mean?

I sense a lot of generic angst

yes. I'd venture to say she's living a typical, off the fucking wall, american lifestyle.

Really? The rest of my family seems fine. There seems to be no consistency in your claim

im not going to say that it does not exist, but i will say this...

i truly believe that a large number of diagnosed cases, which would generally end with someone being medicated, can be treated and handled with a change in lifestyle, and or support from those around you.

What is there to tell? We've obviously lived together in the same exact conditions, she had it and I didn't. So there.

Nobody says they are 'wrong'.  What are you talking about?

Disorders are treated not because they are 'wrong' (whatever that means), they are treated because they have a significantly negative impact on the person's life.  The idea that the mentally ill are blissfully ignorant is a myth.  They are tormented, unhappy and in a miserable state (being so is part of the requirement of the diagnosis).  If not, then usually they are not defined as mentally ill to begin with.

Quite so. But that doesn't mean that all cases are a myth. Yes, mental disorders are terribly over diagnosed and over medicated, but that doesn't make them myths. It just makes them rarer than most people think.

Thats what psychologists and counselors do!  Psychiatrists are a last resort after other methods fail.  Some time they do fail and no matter what Tom Cruise says - meds do positively impact millions of peoples lives in ways that counseling, family and diet failed to do.
