Just birthed and paid a visit by the green goblin?
    #1045529 - 11/12/02 04:54 AM (14 years, 27 days ago)

I just birthed 8 1/2 pint BRF jars onto a layer of perculite.  One of the jars has a few dark green/dark blue streaks on the top (jar bottom) of the cake.  There is also some slight dark green/blue on the cake itself.  I took these cakes out last week, and had them sitting in a plain opaque box being kept around 75 due to lack of time for construction of a proper birthing chamber.  It's really a bummer too because it looks like its just starting to pin.  All the other jars are fine, and this 'bad' one has been isolated (placed under a 1/2 pint jar on top of an upside-down plastic Ball wide-mouth lid).  Is what I'm seeing really contams, or just normal?  This is my first grow, and I want to do everything right

Edit: there was a reasonable amount of water-buildup in the jars do to the unavoidable high humidity of my incubation chamber, could this have caused bruising on the cake since the water would have been resting in the bottom of the jar until I flipped it over to encourage the last 5% of colonization.

Thanks in advance!

You sure the streaks have green in them? you sure it isn't just blue? If it is just blue it is probably bruising.

I am hoping it's blue, but I don't see how it could have been bruised other than my water theory, because it was like that the instant I took it out of the jar.

Upon further analysis, I'm going to say it looks more blue than green, so I put it in the chamber with the others. Am I stupid, or was this the right thing to do? BTW: this puppy has little hard mycelium bumps all over, WOOHOO (I think).

if it's 100% colonized and you haven't noticed anything really strange growing on/inside it, then I'd say you're fine. My humidity is also high in my incubation chamber. Do you get an overlay effect on you mycelium near the center where it germinated? I notice the cakes don't pin on this area where lots of condensation made contact while in the jar. I'm thinking of scruffing the cakes to clean this area off and then dunking and then birthing. a scruff n dunk

The blue streaks appear to be somewhat growing inside, or just beneath the top layer of mycelium. I have noticed the same thing slightly inside on the side of another cake, but I am pretty sure it is blue as well. The mycelium seems to be consistant all around, even though there was some standing water in the jars twoards the end of incubation. I have also noticed the first signs of pins on the top of the cakes.
