My bulk recipe

I have been asking around for a good recipe for a bulk substrate and no one seems to be helping me so I came up with my own. Does this sound about right? -6 cups coir -4 cups composted cow manure -6 cups vermiculite (fine grade) -2 cups gypsum -1 cup coffee grounds -1 cup worm castings If you do the math it is 30% coir, 20% poo, 30% verm, 10% gypsum, 5% coffee, and 5% worm castings. If you would like to critique the recipe just give it to me in a percentage. Should I use more coir, more poo, less verm? I don't know so you tell me. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Seems like it would work.

nothing in there is bad- the more the merrier when it comes to ingredients in a substrate. just my opinion

i was curious why i don't see more people adding BRF to bulk subs. it seems like it would make a decent additive. it's used as a sub in the PF tek yet i rarely see it added to buk subs. i would imagine it would be fairly nutritious.

Grains are a poor choice for bulks subs- because they are nutritious. They invite contamination.

Looks like it would work. But I would add more poo cause poo gives you monster shrooms, and I would lower the verm cause it is none nutritious so it is more of a filler.

^^^ and that's why there's no single best recipe.
Everybody has an opinion, everybody has a theory. Unless and until you run side-by-side tests with an isolate, the data doesn't mean much anyway.

"Grains are a poor choice for bulks subs- because they are nutritious. They invite contamination. "
thanks. just the answer i was looking for.
in this recipe: -6 cups coir -4 cups composted cow manure -6 cups vermiculite (fine grade) -2 cups gypsum -1 cup coffee grounds -1 cup worm castings
one more quick question: aren't the manure, castings, and coffee grounds all nutritious? what is the differene between using these and say, grains? i hope i'm not threadjacking, just something i'm curious about.

Now, I'm just passing on what I've read, I haven't actually tried it.* Poo, for example, has been digested once already. Although there's plenty of nutrition left, much has been removed. On the other hand, fresh, juicy grains, uncolonized by mycelium, are a huge feast to bacteria and molds that may enter. Poo is also, but less so.
Same with the other ingredients, all the way down the line. It's a race between mushroom mycelium and other organisms. You want to set up conditions which favor the right one.
*coir+coffee for me. Add verm, if you like.

Wow!!! Thanks for all these great responses. Based upon what you guys have posted I am going to increase the poo and decrease the verm and replace it with more coffee. Does coir replace verm in the fact that it reduces substrate compaction, cause I hear that composted cow manure can become very muddy and this is why I added the verm, also to absorb moisture to provide more flushes? Can I kick out the verm all together?

Keep some verm, it's a moisture reservoir and soil conditioner. Maybe cut it back to 2 or 4 cups. Or not. Whatever feels right.
Worm castings can get muddy too- you may want to mix those onto moistened verm like doing cakes, then mix that into your sub to help spread it out and bind it to the mix.
Edit- and don't go too crazy on the coffee. 10-20% by volume is pretty standard.

Yup, I was skeptical at first but it works great. I haven't had any major contamination issues either. Keep in mind I use 13 gallons of hot water to pasteurize my bulk.

This is what I use every time- I have only had one tub contaminate, and I was on vacation =/ (fyi I run 9 tubs at once)
this is my magic recipe- It is for 2 tubs with 5 to 6 jars of colonized WBS in each:
14 cups of cow crap 4-5 cups of verm 1 cup of coffee grounds 1/2 brick of coco coir 11 cups water 3 cups of brewed coffee

that's enough for two tubs?
That's only 2.25 gallons, and you use quart jars? That's less then a 1:1 ratio, how deep is your sub and how large are your tubs?
I use 6 to 8 gallons per tub and 1.5 to 2 gallons of spawn an a 105 quart rubbermaid

yeah, I fill my 18 gallon monotubs up 5 inches each. The coco coir really expands. I almost always have a quart or so left over too, which I use for other projects, lol
