pitcher plants in gh

So I was just thinking... would small pitcher plant be a good means of controlling gnat populations in a GH? In my area I could only do it during the summer, but as far as I know thats when the gnats rear their ugly heads. Any thoughts?

cool idea, i have no idea if it would work or not... but it certainly would be worth a try. The problem that comes to mind is that (i think) pitcher plants use a scent reminiscent of rotting meat to attract insects... would the gnats be attracted to it?

I believe they are attracted to the smell of rotting fungus... which is kinda like rotting meat. And the RH is high enough for them in the GH.

Yeah, I was thinking about getting an insect eating plant for the gnats, but then I thought "don't the plants attract more insects to eat?" The pitcher plants (or some of them atleast) produce a nectar and a pattern similar to flowers that attract various insects. Traps and mosquito netting ftw...

Do the flies lay their eggs on the mushrooms or are they just there for a snack and to releive themselves ?
If you sold them, could your customer be finding maggot in the product ?
If so this would seem to be a very serious concern for a commercial grower.
I have seen sticky traps advertised that lure the flies in with violet light.

Yes... the customer could find maggots in their mushrooms... as I did. Grrrrrrr... so far though the mosquito netting has been doing an amazing job. Only one fungus gnat got in as far as I can tell. Tomorrow I will probably go pick up some sticky traps as well. The pitcher plant idea was kind of an afterthought... as I think I have already found my solution.

I had Drosera capensis (cape sundew) growing on my windowsill with some other plants and they effectively killed and ate many many fungus gnats. I have toyed with the idea of them in the gh.
I know lots of people have issues with plants in the gh with mushies, but I dont know if it woulod be a big problem...... It could be, but the only way to know is to try it.

I grow carnivorous plants and though I have yet to try it, I'd like to say they'd be great in the GH.... The main reason being, their ideal soil mixture is essentially a casing layer... I've have seen some cobweb on there before though, and they sit in standing water. But I still will probably try it out soon.

Be careful of fungus gnats. Everytime i see carniverous plants at a green house the spagnum moss/soil has loads of gnats all over them.

Yellow sticky cards son! The violet ones are for thrips.
Fungus gnats lay their eggs in soil. Putting a plant in the room might provide them a place to spawn.

I'm going to agree with caricapapaya and say that Sundew is probably a better bet. They're more indiscriminate in what they catch.

Are you not considdering the alternative of using the gnat's natural enemy ladybugs to help out with the problem? I have never heard if it's been a success for people on mushrooms but organic plant growers swear by it for getting rid of gnats. I have heard they don't eat the plants, but am unsure as to if they will eat mushrooms.

Ehm, Ladybugs? They crawl around on plants, eating only aphids, definitely not interested in fungus gnats at all.

experienced growers have said they eat gnats from plants.
