This pedro needs your help!
    #1044609 - 11/11/02 09:51 PM (14 years, 29 days ago)

I was at a pizza joint with a southwest feel the other night. I noticed that their cactus was looking pretty sad and convinced the employees to cut it back for it's own good. It was cut where it started to bend.

It's pretty messed up and I am looking for some suggestions on what to do to it to make it healthy again. The piece of cactus that is left should do just fine but this cutting sure could use some help.

Here is a picture of the entire cutting. Where it was cut off it was starting it's curve the rest of the cactus was pretty straight. Now this picture was taken in fluorescent lighting so it makes the color way off. The cactus is actually a much lighter green and the towel that I had it sitting on is actually a light mint green. Sorry I couldn't get a better picture but I used a friends camera and only had this chance to get the picture.

This is a picture at the top of the bend where it is severely damaged from the weight of the bent cactus it was supporting.

Now this is a picture of the tightest curve at the end of the cactus. This cactus was growing so messed up that it was actually bending down into the soil of a plant next to it. It apparently was starting to grow roots where it was touching the soil.

Those are the main things to take note of. I need some help figuring out what to do with this cactus. It is pretty flimsy and unhealthy and since I am a novice at cacti I could use some advice. I have one san pedro that is healthy and happy so I know the VERY basics of cactus care but I don't know a whole lot about taking cuttings and such.

Thanks a bunch

Karen

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

Hello if i was you i would split that cacti in three cuttings. Cut them where they bend. Try to cut just pass the bend. This way it get a strait shot up to the sun. Next those cactis just need good old sun light. its grown like that because its been inside all its life. I would slowly put it outin the morning for a few hours bring it in around noon for a week in a half then move it up an our every other week. if you work put it in the sun a few hours just befor sun set. if you give it full sun it will go in to shock.they should be fine after time. maybe a window just out of direct light tell you can go full time in the sun, peace and good luck and grow

yes, cut into 3 pieces like said above wait till the cuts scab over- very important- then treat with a rooting hormone, plant in quality cactus souil and put in the sunniest place you can find. water 1 time a month and every other time you water use 1/2 strength grow fertilizer.

listen to those last two posts! they're right. if the length of the cutting looks like you can cut it up in more than 3 pieces do so. then you can have maybe 6 sp's!

You were right it was around 3 feet so it would be plenty for a nice fun evening but I figured I should go ahead and grow it out so I can have more plants in the future. I think of it as an investment for the future.

I decided to go ahead and cut it in quite a few piece because there were SO many weak parts of the cactus. I figured I would rather start off with smaller cuttings and have more smaller but stronger healthy cacti then fewer larger but weaker ones.

They are still scabbing over though so I don't really have much of a report on them yet.

How long would you say that it generally takes for them to completely scab over?
