WTF is going on?
    #10437820 - 06/01/09 10:58 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

So I have had this issue pretty much since I was younger. My mind would wake up and my body still be asleep. And I would slowly have to try my hardest to like move my toe or finger and make noises to wake up the rest of my body. Now recently it has gotten a lot worse like every night almost. I will wake up my body will be stuck and I can like 3rd person see around me. But, it is like an emergency to wake up because if I do not wake my self up something I do not know what is going to get me. I have looked up a little about this and it says it is like sleep paralysis. It says it is common to happen a couple times in a life time. But, is there any other reasons it is happening more and it is getting scarier and getting harder to wake my self up?

What you are experiencing is called sleep paralysis.  It's really common, if you ask me.  There are other threads that have been posted on it with this one being the most recent:

sleep paralysis thread.

It's a great thread, and I highly suggest you read it.  A lot of people think of sleep paralysis as a gift because it allows you to experience astral projection and out of body experiences.

If it's really bothering your life, I'd suggest taking melatonin, some other herbal supplement, or seeing a doctor.

The wikipedia source states

Quote:

Sleep paralysis occurs during REM sleep, thus preventing the body from manifesting movements made in the subject's dreams. Very little is known about the physiology of sleep paralysis.[citation needed] However, some have suggested that it may be linked to post-synaptic inhibition of motor neurons in the pons region of the brain.[citation needed] In particular, low levels of melatonin may stop the depolarization current in the nerves, preventing the stimulation of the muscles and any consequent enactment of the dream activity by the body (e.g. preventing a sleeper from flailing his legs when dreaming about running).[citation needed]

Several studies have concluded that many or most people will experience sleep paralysis at least once or twice in their lives.[citation needed] A study conducted by Sedaghat F. et al. has investigated the prevalence of sleep paralysis among Iranian medical students. 24.1% of students reported experiencing sleep paralysis at least once in their lifetime. The same result was reported among Japanese, Nigerian, Kuwaiti, Sudanese and American students.[14]

Many people who commonly enter sleep paralysis also suffer from narcolepsy. In African Americans, panic disorder occurs with sleep paralysis more frequently than in Caucasians.[15] Some reports read that various factors increase the likelihood of both paralysis and hallucinations. These include:[16]

    * Sleeping in a face upwards or supine position
    * Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
    * Increased stress
    * Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
    * A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode.

Which leads me to believe taking over-the-counter melatonin might help.  Also, if you look in the other thread I posted, there were a few people who had sleep paralysis during withdrawal from drugs.  If you take psychoactive drugs and quit taking them, perhaps it helps cause.

Sleep paralysis often occurred for me when I slept in environments out of my normal bed.  It also happens from having a weird sleeping schedule or from sleep deprivation.
