Is this coir alright to use?
    #10433802 - 06/01/09 04:15 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Im in australia and its harder to find materials here :frown:
I found these coir blocks in Kmart here and was wondering if they were ok to use. They have added slow release chemical fertilizers added to it.
total nitrogen: 16%
total phosphorus: 3%
total Potasium: 12.5%
I can get plain coir too...but was wondering whether this would be ok...i was planning to add coffee grounds but was wondering whether this would be a good alternative to the grounds as there is nitrogen added....thanks for ur answers in advance!!

it's OK to use. any thing called "coco coir" can be used.
skip the details! it's a waste of time.
just do it. ask questions if it won't work.

I would not use it, because it has  chemicals in it.. That could potentially cause problems..  Also you want coco coir not coir peat brick..  Cause coir is a bulk sub and peat moss is used for casing..

I wouldn't worry to much about the cemicals as long as you test the ph level of it.  I would like to see that hydrated,  if its mostly peat then I wouldn't use it.

I think its just coir in it..but they use the word peat as a reference to ppl who dont know what coir is like...its kinda like peat so they added that to the name. I might try leaching out the chemicals by soaking it and squeezing the water out a few times....but then im gonna buy another plain coir product.
