Sterilizing Plastic Petri Dishes

So I bought of sleeve of plastic petri dishes not realizing that they are really only good once. Is there a way to sterilize them? I tried soaking them in alcohol and whatnot but most still get contams.
Am I forced to buy glass ones?

I've gotten away without contams by wiping the petris very well with rubbing alcohol in a glove box right before filling with agar. Make sure ALL the alcohol evaporates first or your mycelium wouldn't appreciate it too much. But your dishes should be sterile the first time, and you have like, a bunch of them, right? You may not need to worry for quite a while. Myk

You can buy polypropylene if you want to sterilize (pressure cooker). Glass is slippery and heavy, so remember that when ordering.
Polystyrene is the standard, it can't really be sterilized at home.

I got a sleeve of twenty and have used them all. If you have had success, that gives me hope. Do you let it evaporate in the glove box or wipe it down with a paper towel? Mini tek please sir.
I will eventually get glass, but I've invested enough in this hobby for right now. You know how it is...

In my humble opinion (though I'm sure many would agree) polypropylene is much better than glass.

I sterilized my plastic petri dishes by using my cannabis grow light. It is a 400W HP Sodium and I brought it very close to the dishes for several hours. The spectrum is rich in UV rays so they kill contams) However, when u buy a bag of like 20 dishes they are already sterile in the bag.

plastic petir dishes come sterile. theres no need to try and sterilise them or clean them
Keep them in there plastic bag until ready to use, and open them up infront of a flowhood, or in your glovebox.

The plastic ones can be found for pretty cheap if you search around ebay. I lucked out and found 60 sterile vented dishes for 30 bucks.
Lol I did try to PC a sleeve of the standard plastic ones thinking that they were PP and they melted. They didn't melt too bad, but still enough to render them useless.

I assume you are asking about re-using them?
Not recommended for plastic dishes; I ususally just toss them, and they'll melt if you actually want to sterilize them in a pc.
Alcohol sanitizes, it doesn't sterilize. Now, I'm just pulling this idea out of my ass, but it may be worth a shot: Only good way I can think of, run them through your dishwasher or something to get the shit off them, then construct a box with UVC lamps inside. DO NOT let these lamps be on when they might shine at you, they can fuck up your eyes/give you cancer/mutate shit/kill you. This meathod is used to sterilize plastic goggles and such in labs sometimes though, if memory serves.

whoops i must have posted when i was half asleep.
Alcohol cant be used to sterilise, its a sanitiser. it wont kill everything. The difference between sterilisation and sanitisation, is the difference between a 12 log reduction and a 2 log reduction of contaminants. thats a big difference.
Alcohol wont kill many things, like bacciluss or mould spores

Yeah I tried it once for fun, stunk like crap and totally melted. The ones that read "PP" on them can be autoclaved without melting.

I use(ed) a cotton swab with some iso alcohol. I thoroughly wiped the fingers of my gloves (in my glove box), then wiped the outside of the petri's, then the inside last. I was thinking that working from outside to the inside would eliminate any chance of contams from the outside transferring to the inside. I then closed the dishes. Whatever alcohol was still left inside the dishes after about five minutes I allowed to evaporate with the caps off. DON'T wipe the alcohol off; it will ruin the sterility. Although this worked for me, it may be because my glove box is VERY sterile. It has a HEPA filter to purge the air before I perform any operations. The air flow from the HEAP helped my dishes dry faster. (I ran the air flow while drying) Good luck man! I made five dishes that day, and none of them contaminated. This method also reduces guilt of throwing the dishes away... I the environment Myk (sorry for the late response, comp crashed...:( )
