Psylocibe caerulescens
    #1042678 - 11/11/02 09:00 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Hello people!

I am from Holland, so my apologies for my bad english ;-)

Lately, I saw a dutch article on the internet about the Psylocibe caerulescens, which is known to be an very common mushroom in Holland, and I think also in the rest of Europe. It can best be found on woodchips, ans has a green/blue color. The author of the article told that this mushroom was very psychoactive, even more than the psilocybe semilanceata!! But when I started searching for info, not one web site could tell me anything about psilocibyn in the psylocibe caerulescens. Is it maybe that the psychoactivity of this mushroom is discovered a very short time ago, or is the article I read bullshit?

I was first triying to find some semilanceatas, but the season seems to be over and I only find mycelias, which look exactly like the semi, they only have white spores :-(.... Is the season over already??

I hope someone can help me with these 2 problems!

greetings from Holland,

Dirk (djhwolters@hotmail.com)

I think either you or the writer of the article has their species mixed up. Ps. caerulescens is a tropical/subtropical species that fruits in the spring and summer. I've only heard of it being found in the americas. Ps. cyanescens on the other hand is a caramel capped wood lover that grows on woodchips in the fall in temperate areas such as the pacific northwest and parts of europe. I think those are what you're thinking of....

Good luck.

DH

YEs P. cyanescens which is also known in Holland as Hyphaloma cyanescens is commonin woodchips in northern citiees with a colder weather than normal.

On the other hand, Pcaerulescens which was originally discovered in Hunstville Alabama in the early 1920 was never again found in North America but was common among Mazatec Indians in Oaxaca, Mexico where i t is known as the Deruumbe mushroom or landslide mushroom, common in landslides along sugar cane fields nd similar habitas in a tripoical or semi-sub tropical climate.

Here is a Psilocybe (Hyphaloma) cyanescens Wakefield, from North America and from most European and GB countries inclkuding the Netherlands.

Click on each photo to enlarge.

And here is a cluster of Psilocybe caerulescens Murrill

and another cluster from a sandy/lome landslide next to a sugar cane field.

And a small collection by R. Gordon Wason and Rolf, Singer, Roger Heim and friends from Oaxaca inthe late 1950s.

Have a shroomy day.

mj

The author of the article I read was talking about a mushroom like this one. It looks almost the same, though I think the species on this pic is just a little bit different. (couldn't find a pic of the real one) In Holland it is called "valse kopergroenzwam" which in english means something like "fake copper green mushroom"

thanks for your posts!

ahh, Psilocybe/Stropharia caerulea probably. I've found them, but I don't think they're active, never eaten them myself.

Well, I think it is...only look at that blue psilocybin-like color (many psilocybin containing shrooms have that..) I will try to mail the author of the article I read, his source (a well-known dutch newspaper) looked trustworthly to me!

I realize that the blue coloring is deceptive. But they don't bruise blue, that's just their natural coloration. PMoTW says that it's activity is unknown, but it might be mildly active, I would guess that it's not though..... They seem more stropharia-like than psilocybe-like. Or, maybe they're latently active and only strains from certain areas produce goodies, kinda like laughing gyms.

That is actually Stropharia aeruginosa, not Stropharia cerulea.
