PF jars and the subject of tape
    #1039459 - 11/09/02 07:20 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

what is the function of the tape on the holes of the pf jars. is it to keep the water out while cooking. or to keep contaminants out. or to keep the humidity in? what?

Main function is to keep contamination out.  Cover the jars with foil to keep the water out while cooking, though I suppose that could be a secondary function of the tape as well.

also is the tape essential? could one omit the tape and still have positive results or will the substrates become waterlogged?

I'd say the tape is pretty esential, at least in the initial stages of colonization.. I don't mean to be rude, but what's the deal.. you don't have a tape-phobia do you?!

It is unnecessary.

The tape helps keep water out during sterilization, and it also keeps the jars sealed until innoculation. You can inject thru the tape and then cover with poly fill and a coffee filter or two.

Well after I inoculate the jars, I place 2 coffee filters over the lids and then put a rubber band around the coffee filters to keep them there. (kinda like a condom for the lid of your jars)

The only thing covering my jars has ever been a piece of aluminum foil to keep water out during sterilization. No contams, ever.

I also use only Aluminum foil over the jars and it has given me positive results so far.
