I didn't say anything about God, just saying that back in the days it was assumed by the vaste majority of the population that God existed.
But I don't believe in God, yeah, although I respect the dude.

In my definition, humans are the only animals to have a conscience, although it is debatable.

You believe that it's debatable, yet you still have a set opinion?

my doberman took a dump in the floor one day, very unusual for him but he's been locked in for the entire day and just couldnt hold it any more, he went to the dirty laundry, pulled a towel out and covered it up, when I got home I saw the towel, grabbed it and saw the poop, he went to his bed without me saying a word
the dog expressed guilt and shame, added to it with deception
make your own assessment

Blewmeanie: I have an opinion, yes. It's harder than saying "I don't know", but if you want to say "I don't know" and choose the easy path, your choice...! Even though you might still have an opinion.
And I do have a cat I love, he's like my baby. But to me, that's what he is, a newborn without conscience, who doesn't react in front of a mirror.
However, I added it was debatable because I don't have a set opinion on the matter (listen, blewmeanie). Having examples like the story of Koko and All Ball could lead to certain conclusions (I don't really use my relation to my cat as an example, since it's very subjective); however, we don't know enough to claim that it shows the presence of a conscience. Animals don't have language like human beings (they don't have useless communication) for example. I cannot answer certainly to this question.

Maybe the first time, but they don't seem to have a big interest in what is there, while humans always react and focus their attention on the mirror (that's why you often have mirrors in places they don't want you to stay).
I think dolphins, humans, apes and elephants are the only animals who can recognize themselves in a mirror.

You don't think vanity has anything to do with it do ya? People grow up with the ability to see how they look. Animals could care less. Doesn't mean that they aren't conscious, just because they lack vanity.
I have seen virtually every emotion in my pets. Even grief. How can something experience the loss of a loved one, and not be conscience.
I think you are confusing conscience with intelligence.

I've seen emotions in my cat's eyes to, but first, I don't thing emotions lead to the conclusion that there is a conscience, and second, I wouldn't say it's only vanity when we look at ourself in the mirror.
Have your never looked at your face, getting closer and closer to your image, just to see what it is like to be close to you? Weren't you amazed by the though that the image was you? You know, that "hey, is that me...?" feeling.
I'll also add that I'm quite careful about conclusions I make about my cat. I love him, and consider him as member of my family, I can't be objective when it comes to him.
