I don't know if this is the right section to post this in but I heard someone say that you need some kind of card or something if you wanna go to Russia.
I live in Canada but I'd like to take a trip to Russia. Do I need anything special ahead or time or do I just buy my ticket and fly there like I would if I was flying to say Italy.

> Another question, can I go visit Chernobyl?
That is difficult. There are, or at least there were, checkpoints on the roads leading into the area. You have to have an official escort, wear radiation badges, etc. The roads and buildings are no longer (very) contaminated, but if you get into the grass or forest, you will be pretty much screwed. As crazy as it sounds, there were still a few people living in the region. I don't know if they are still there or not. This was all around 20 years ago.

Hmmm.
I HAVE to go there!
What happens if I go in the grass or forest? Grass is growing there?
Could I go in the grass and forest with a suit on? How do those radiation badges work anyhow, they check how much radioation your bodies absorbed?
I saw the badges in the movie PU-239

> What happens if I go in the grass or forest?
The level of radiation is much higher if you get off the roads. Spend enough time there and you die from radiation poisoning.
> Grass is growing there?
Yes, the wildlife recovered quickly.
> Could I go in the grass and forest with a suit on?
Yes, but the suit wouldn't protect you.
> How do those radiation badges work anyhow
The most common ones use film that slowly changes color when exposed to ionizing radiation. When you wear it, your exposure to ionizing radiation is recorded. Too much exposure leads to radiation poisoning and a slow, painful death.

Check out: http://www.kiddofspeed.com/chapter1.html
You'd have to be pretty foolish to get a lethal dose of radiation there. Unless you actually want to go to the reactor site.
Probably the worst part would be getting just enough to turn your badge or just enough dust on your clothes to set off the geiger counter. Then you get to have a nice chemical shower in the cold with soldiers scrubbing you down with push brooms.

Apparently, my cousin's uncle's wife's parents needed some sort of special permission to leave Russia to see their daughters "newborn" baby. They applied when she first got pregnant, and finally arrived when the baby was 2 years old.
I dont know if it would be the same going over, but they have some strict travel laws.

there's still a few people living in the area, and you're right about staying out of the grass and woods, also a good adea to avoid the area (70km or so) if the forecast calls for rain because it kicks the fallout back up into the roadways
permits to travel into the area are very restricted, it's fine to hit most cities and you'll be more welcome in smaller villages, avoid traveling into belarus especially alone, several countries require and entry and exit visa so plan your itinerary and get your visa approval well in advance
some countries will also require you to prove ability to support, paid hotel and some form of mans of payment, you may also be required to purchase insurance to enter, it can varry depending on your stay, 90 to a year is usually under $100
